Product Description

Small plant, big jungle energy! The Dwarf Elephant Ear might be petite, but its dramatic foliage certainly knows how to make an entrance. With deep green, arrow-shaped leaves, striking silvery-white veins and beautifully contrasting purple-toned undersides, this little tropical beauty packs plenty of personality into a compact package.

Its glossy, sculptural foliage gives it an almost prehistoric appearance, making it a wonderful choice for adding a bold tropical touch to shelves, desks and smaller indoor spaces. As new leaves unfurl, their intricate patterns and distinctive shape become even more impressive.

A compact relative of the larger Amazonica Alocasias, this variety is perfect for plant lovers who want that dramatic elephant ear look without needing quite so much room. Give it a warm, bright position, consistent moisture and a little attention, and it'll reward you with gorgeous foliage that really stands out.

Why You'll Love It

• Dramatic, arrow-shaped leaves with striking silvery-white veins.
• Rich green foliage with contrasting purple-toned undersides.
• Compact growth habit that's ideal for smaller indoor spaces.
• Beautiful tropical appearance without the size of larger Alocasias.
• Fresh new leaves that bring plenty of excitement as they unfurl.

The Details

• Botanical Name: Alocasia × amazonica 'Dwarf Amazonica'
• Common Name: Dwarf Elephant Ear
• Pot Size: 70mm Nursery Pot
• Plant Type: Tropical evergreen perennial

Light

Dwarf Elephant Ear thrives in bright, indirect light, where it can maintain its rich foliage colour and distinctive leaf patterns. A position near an east-facing window or slightly back from a bright north-facing window is ideal.

Gentle morning sunlight can be beneficial, but avoid prolonged exposure to harsh direct sunlight, which may scorch the leaves. While it can tolerate moderately bright conditions, insufficient light can result in slower growth, weaker stems and smaller leaves.

Watering

Keep the potting mix lightly and consistently moist during active growth, allowing the upper 1–2cm to begin drying before watering again. Alocasias appreciate regular moisture but dislike sitting in soggy conditions, so good drainage is essential.

Because this plant comes in a small 70mm nursery pot, the mix may dry more quickly than in larger containers. Check it regularly rather than relying on a fixed watering schedule.

During cooler weather or periods of reduced growth, allow the mix to dry a little further between waterings. Avoid leaving water sitting in the saucer or decorative cover pot.

Feeding

Feed year-round with a diluted, balanced liquid fertiliser to support healthy foliage and steady growth.

Alocasias can be relatively hungry plants when actively producing new leaves, so regular, gentle feeding is beneficial. Adjust the frequency according to the plant's growth rate, feeding less often during cooler periods when growth naturally slows.

Avoid excessive fertiliser applications, particularly when the plant is dormant or producing very little new growth.

Growing

Dwarf Amazonica is a compact, clump-forming Alocasia that grows from an underground corm-like rhizome. Its upright leaf stems and sculptural foliage make it particularly attractive as a small feature plant.

It prefers warm temperatures, higher humidity and a well-aerated potting mix that retains some moisture without becoming waterlogged. A tropical-style mix containing quality potting mix, coco coir, perlite and pumice provides a good balance of moisture retention and drainage.

Protect it from cold draughts, heating vents and sudden temperature fluctuations. Ideally, keep temperatures above 15°C for consistent growth.

Like other Alocasias, this variety may slow down considerably or enter dormancy during cooler periods. Older leaves can occasionally yellow and die back as the plant redirects energy towards new growth.

Pet Friendly?

No. Alocasia × amazonica contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals and is toxic to cats, dogs and other pets if chewed or ingested.

These crystals can cause irritation and swelling of the mouth, tongue and throat, along with drooling, vomiting and difficulty swallowing. Keep this plant safely out of reach of curious pets and children.

Good to Know

Alocasias have a natural habit of occasionally shedding older leaves as new ones develop, particularly while they're young. A yellowing older leaf isn't necessarily a cause for concern if the plant is otherwise healthy and actively growing.

These plants can also be sensitive to changes in their environment, so allow some time for your Dwarf Elephant Ear to settle into its new home. Consistent warmth, suitable light and careful watering will help minimise stress.

Keep an eye out for spider mites, which can occasionally affect Alocasias, especially in warm, dry indoor environments. Regularly inspecting the undersides of the leaves will help you spot any unwanted visitors early.

• We photograph as many of our plants as possible; however, some listings may occasionally use supplier images.
• As plants are living things, every plant is unique and natural variations in size, colour and fullness should be expected.
• The plant you receive may not be the exact one pictured, but we'll always hand-pick a beautiful, healthy plant we'd happily display in our own home.
