Product Description

Who needs flowers when your foliage looks this good? The Candy Stripes Begonia is a real showstopper, with rich, velvety leaves and a striking lime-green stripe running right down the centre. Add in those beautiful reddish undersides and you've got a plant that knows how to make an entrance!

Also known as Begonia listada, this tropical beauty features elongated, slightly textured leaves in deep olive-green to chocolate-brown tones. The contrast between its dark foliage and vibrant central stripe is something special, while the fine hairs covering its leaves and stems give it an irresistibly soft, almost suede-like appearance.

With its naturally bushy, somewhat sprawling growth habit, Candy Stripes makes a gorgeous addition to a plant shelf, side table or indoor plant collection. It's a fantastic choice for Begonia lovers and anyone who appreciates foliage that's a little out of the ordinary.

  • Striking lime-green stripes running through rich, dark foliage.
  • Beautiful velvety leaves with a wonderfully soft texture.
  • Reddish leaf undersides add another layer of colour and interest.
  • Unique foliage patterns that make every leaf worth admiring.
  • A naturally bushy growth habit that's full of tropical character.

The Details

• Botanical Name: Begonia listada
• Common Name: Candy Stripes Begonia, Striped Begonia
• Pot Size: 130mm Nursery Pot
• Plant Type: Evergreen tropical foliage Begonia

Light

Prefers bright, indirect light to maintain its rich foliage colours and encourage healthy, compact growth. A position near an east-facing window or slightly back from a bright north-facing window is ideal.

It can tolerate moderate indirect light, although growth may become slower and more stretched. Avoid harsh direct afternoon sunlight, which can scorch its delicate, velvety leaves.

Watering

Keep the potting mix lightly and consistently moist, allowing the upper few centimetres to begin drying before watering again. Candy Stripes doesn't appreciate sitting in soggy soil, but it also prefers not to dry out completely for extended periods.

Water thoroughly and allow any excess moisture to drain away. Try to water directly onto the potting mix rather than over the foliage, as its fine, hairy leaves can hold moisture and may develop spotting or fungal problems if they remain wet.

Adjust your watering routine according to the temperature, available light and how quickly the potting mix dries.

Feeding

Feed year-round with a diluted, balanced liquid fertiliser to support healthy foliage and steady growth. Adjust the frequency according to its growth rate, feeding less often during cooler periods when growth naturally slows.

Begonias can be sensitive to excessive fertiliser, so a gentle, regular approach is better than strong applications.

Growing

Candy Stripes has a naturally branching, somewhat sprawling growth habit, producing beautiful foliage along its softly hairy stems. With the right conditions, it can gradually develop into a full, leafy plant.

Grow in a light, well-draining potting mix that retains some moisture while allowing plenty of air around the roots. It appreciates warm temperatures, moderate to high humidity and good air circulation.

Avoid cold draughts, sudden temperature changes and direct airflow from heating or cooling systems. Pinching back growing tips can encourage branching and help maintain a fuller appearance.

Pet Friendly?

Unfortunately, no. Like other Begonias, Candy Stripes contains compounds that are toxic to cats and dogs if ingested, with the underground portions generally containing the highest concentrations.

Keep this one out of reach of curious pets and little hands.

Good to Know

The beautiful lime-green stripe running down each leaf is a natural feature of Begonia listada, creating a striking contrast against its darker foliage. The intensity of the colours can vary depending on the age of the leaf and the growing conditions.

Its velvety appearance comes from the fine hairs covering the leaf surface, so it's best to avoid regularly misting or wiping the foliage. If the leaves become dusty, gently remove loose dust with a soft, dry brush.

Although Candy Stripes appreciates humidity, good air circulation is equally important. A humid environment with constantly wet foliage can encourage fungal problems, so aim for moisture in the air rather than moisture sitting on the leaves.

Under favourable conditions, it may also produce clusters of small, pale flowers, although its spectacular foliage is undoubtedly the main attraction.

• We photograph as many of our plants as possible; however, some listings may occasionally use supplier images.

• As plants are living things, every plant is unique and natural variations in size, colour and fullness should be expected.

• The plant you receive may not be the exact one pictured, but we'll always hand-pick a beautiful, healthy plant we'd happily display in our own home.
