Botanically known as Begonia maculata 'White Ice', this eye-catching variety features deep green foliage decorated with an abundance of contrasting white markings. Flip those gorgeous leaves over and you'll discover beautiful reddish-burgundy undersides, adding another layer of colour and character. Its upright, cane-like stems give it an elegant, slightly architectural appearance that's just as lovely on a shelf as it is displayed in a decorative planter.

Perfect for plant lovers who enjoy something a little different, the White Ice Begonia combines dramatic foliage with a graceful growing habit. Given the right conditions, it can also produce delicate clusters of flowers, making this already beautiful plant even more special. Whether you're building a Begonia collection or looking for a statement piece with personality, this spotted stunner is ready to steal the spotlight!

Why You'll Love It

• Striking silvery-white spots create a beautiful contrast against deep green foliage.

• Elegant, angel-wing-shaped leaves feature gorgeous reddish-burgundy undersides.

• Upright, cane-like growth adds height and structure to indoor plant displays.

• Can produce delicate clusters of flowers when grown in favourable conditions.

• A standout addition to Begonia collections and tropical indoor spaces.

The Details

• Botanical Name: Begonia maculata 'White Ice'
• Common Name: White Ice Begonia, Polka Dot Begonia, Angel Wing Begonia
• Pot Size: 130mm Nursery Pot
• Plant Type: Evergreen tropical cane Begonia

Light

Thrives in bright, indirect light, ideally near a window with filtered sunlight. Gentle morning sun is generally well tolerated, but avoid harsh afternoon sunlight, which can scorch its delicate foliage.

Medium indirect light is suitable, although brighter conditions encourage stronger growth and more vibrant leaf markings.

Watering

Keep the potting mix lightly moist, allowing the top 2–3cm to begin drying before watering thoroughly. Ensure excess water drains freely, as prolonged waterlogging can lead to root problems.

Avoid letting the root ball dry out completely, particularly during active growth. Check the soil regularly and adjust watering frequency according to seasonal conditions.

Feeding

Feed year-round with a diluted, balanced liquid fertiliser to encourage healthy foliage, strong stems and flowering.

Adjust the frequency according to its growth rate, feeding more regularly during active growth and less often when growth naturally slows. Avoid excessive fertiliser, as Begonias can be sensitive to nutrient build-up.

Growing

The White Ice Begonia develops upright, cane-like stems that may benefit from staking as the plant matures. Occasional pruning encourages branching and helps maintain a fuller, bushier appearance.

It enjoys warm temperatures of approximately 18–27°C and moderate to high humidity. Protect it from cold draughts and sudden temperature changes.

Plant in a light, airy, well-draining tropical potting mix that provides a balance of moisture retention and root aeration. Good airflow is also important, as Begonias can be susceptible to fungal problems such as powdery mildew.

Pet Friendly?

No. Begonia maculata is toxic to cats and dogs if ingested due to the presence of soluble calcium oxalates, particularly concentrated in the underground parts.

Keep out of reach of curious pets and children.

Good to Know

The White Ice Begonia belongs to the cane Begonia group, commonly known as Angel Wing Begonias because of their distinctive asymmetrical leaf shape.

Its silvery-white spots are a natural feature of the foliage, with the size and distribution of the markings varying from leaf to leaf. This gives each plant its own unique appearance.

Mature plants may also produce clusters of delicate white or pale pink flowers, adding another lovely feature to an already eye-catching plant.

• We photograph as many of our plants as possible; however, some listings may occasionally use supplier images.

• As plants are living things, every plant is unique and natural variations in size, colour and fullness should be expected.

• The plant you receive may not be the exact one pictured, but we'll always hand-pick a beautiful, healthy plant we'd happily display in our own home.
