Product Description

A little blue, a little green and a whole lot of leafy goodness! Meet the Blue Star Fern, a wonderfully unusual tropical beauty with soft, blue-green foliage and beautifully wavy fronds that give it a look all of its own. Unlike your traditional feathery ferns, Phlebodium aureum has elongated, irregularly lobed leaves that bring a lovely mix of colour, texture and personality to any indoor plant collection.

With its naturally relaxed, slightly wild growth habit, the Blue Star Fern is perfect for adding a soft, tropical feel to your home. Pop it on a shelf, style it in a decorative planter or let its arching fronds spread out amongst your other leafy favourites. Its distinctive silvery-blue colouring creates a beautiful contrast against darker green foliage, making it a standout without needing to shout for attention.

And here's some good news for fern lovers! The Blue Star Fern is generally more forgiving than many of its fussier fern relatives. Give it a cosy spot with filtered light, a little humidity and a well-draining potting mix, and it'll reward you with gorgeous new growth. A lovely choice for beginners looking to try something different or experienced plant lovers who can't resist a fern with a little character!

  • Distinctive wavy, irregularly lobed fronds full of texture and personality

  • Generally more forgiving than many traditional fern varieties
  • A wonderful way to introduce soft, tropical greenery into your home

The Details

• Botanical Name: Phlebodium aureum
• Common Name: Blue Star Fern
• Pot Size: 125mm Nursery Pot
• Plant Type: Tropical Epiphytic Fern

Light

Prefers bright, indirect light to encourage healthy growth and maintain its beautiful blue-green foliage. Can tolerate moderate light, although growth may slow. Avoid harsh, direct afternoon sunlight, which can scorch the fronds. Gentle morning sunlight is generally well tolerated.

Watering

Water when the top layer of potting mix begins to dry, keeping the mix lightly moist without becoming waterlogged. Allow excess water to drain away and avoid leaving the pot sitting in water. Although more tolerant of brief dry periods than some ferns, prolonged dryness can cause crispy or browning fronds.

Feeding

Feed year-round with a diluted, balanced liquid fertiliser to encourage healthy foliage and steady growth. Ferns are relatively light feeders, so use a weaker solution and reduce feeding frequency during periods of slower growth.

Growing

Prefers a loose, airy, well-draining potting mix that retains a little moisture without becoming soggy. As an epiphytic fern, it appreciates good airflow around its roots and enjoys moderate to high humidity, although established plants can adapt to typical indoor conditions.

Its creeping rhizomes naturally grow along the surface of the potting mix and should remain exposed rather than being buried when repotting.

Pet Friendly?

Yes! Phlebodium aureum is generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, making it a lovely choice for pet-friendly households. As with any plant, it's still best to discourage curious pets from chewing on the foliage.

Good to Know

Those unusual blue-green fronds are completely natural! Their soft, slightly silvery colouring is one of the Blue Star Fern's most distinctive features, while the irregular lobes and wavy edges give each frond its own personality.

You may also notice fuzzy, creeping rhizomes developing around the base of the plant. These are a normal part of its growth and help the fern spread. Keep them above the potting mix rather than covering them with soil, as burying them can encourage rot.

• We photograph as many of our plants as possible; however, some listings may occasionally use supplier images.

• As plants are living things, every plant is unique and natural variations in size, colour and fullness should be expected.

• The plant you receive may not be the exact one pictured, but we'll always hand-pick a beautiful, healthy plant we'd happily display in our own home.
