Product Description

Bright eyes, bold patterns and plenty of personality! The Bright Eyes Begonia is a little tropical treasure with beautifully patterned foliage that looks almost too good to be real. Its vibrant green leaves are decorated with dramatic chocolate-brown markings, creating an eye-catching contrast that's guaranteed to turn a few heads.

Botanically known as Begonia bowerae 'Bright Eyes', this charming variety features small, asymmetrical leaves with gently pointed tips and fine, delicate hairs along their edges. The intricate markings give each leaf a wonderfully artistic appearance, while its compact, spreading growth creates a lush display of colour and texture.

And there's more to love than just the foliage! Bright Eyes can produce dainty clusters of pale pink to white flowers held above the leaves on slender stems, adding a soft, whimsical touch to its already striking appearance. Perfect for shelves, tabletops and smaller indoor spaces, this character-filled Begonia proves that you don't need to be big to make a statement.

Why You'll Love It

• Vibrant green foliage features intricate chocolate-brown markings.

• Small, textured leaves have beautifully detailed patterns and delicate hairy edges.

• Compact, spreading growth makes it ideal for shelves and smaller spaces.

• Produces charming clusters of pale pink to white flowers.

• A distinctive addition to Begonia collections and tropical indoor displays.

The Details

• Botanical Name: Begonia bowerae 'Bright Eyes'
• Common Name: Bright Eyes Begonia, Eyelash Begonia
• Pot Size: 130mm Nursery Pot
• Plant Type: Tropical rhizomatous Begonia

Light

Prefers bright, indirect light to maintain its vibrant foliage colours and encourage healthy, compact growth. A position near a window with filtered sunlight is ideal.

Gentle morning sunlight can be tolerated, but avoid harsh direct sun, which may scorch the delicate leaves. Medium indirect light is also suitable, although growth may be slower.

Watering

Keep the potting mix lightly moist, allowing the top 2–3cm to begin drying before watering thoroughly. Ensure excess water drains freely, as Begonias are sensitive to waterlogged roots.

Avoid allowing the plant to remain completely dry for extended periods. Check moisture levels regularly and adjust watering frequency according to seasonal conditions.

Feeding

Feed year-round with a diluted, balanced liquid fertiliser to encourage healthy foliage and steady growth.

Adjust feeding frequency according to the plant's growth rate, feeding more regularly during active growth and reducing applications when growth naturally slows. Avoid overfertilising, as Begonias can be sensitive to excessive nutrient salts.

Growing

Bright Eyes is a compact, rhizomatous Begonia with a naturally spreading growth habit. Its foliage develops from creeping stems, gradually forming a dense, textured mound.

It prefers warm temperatures of approximately 18–26°C and moderate to high humidity. Protect it from cold draughts and sudden temperature changes.

Grow in a light, airy, well-draining tropical potting mix that retains some moisture while allowing good root aeration. Maintain gentle airflow around the plant to help prevent fungal problems, and avoid leaving water sitting on its delicate foliage.

Pet Friendly?

No. Begonia bowerae is considered toxic to cats and dogs if ingested due to soluble calcium oxalates, particularly concentrated in its underground parts.

Keep out of reach of curious pets and children.

Good to Know

Bright Eyes belongs to the Begonia bowerae group, often referred to as Eyelash Begonias because of the fine hairs that line the edges of their leaves.

Its distinctive chocolate-brown markings contrast beautifully with the bright green foliage, with natural variations in pattern and colour making each leaf unique.

Unlike taller cane Begonias, this variety grows from creeping rhizomes, creating a lower, spreading appearance that's particularly well suited to decorative pots and compact indoor displays.

The delicate flowers are held above the foliage on slender stems, creating a lovely contrast against the richly patterned leaves.

• We photograph as many of our plants as possible; however, some listings may occasionally use supplier images.

• As plants are living things, every plant is unique and natural variations in size, colour and fullness should be expected.

• The plant you receive may not be the exact one pictured, but we'll always hand-pick a beautiful, healthy plant we'd happily display in our own home.
