Product Description

Orange you glad we found this beauty? Meet the Orange Flower Spike Bromeliad, a tropical showstopper that's bringing all the colour! With its vibrant, fiery orange flower spike rising proudly above a fountain of glossy green foliage, this gorgeous Bromeliad certainly knows how to brighten up a room. Bold, beautiful and just a little bit dramatic, it's the perfect plant for anyone who loves their greenery with an extra splash of personality.

Its long, arching leaves form a lush, sculptural rosette, creating a beautiful contrast against those striking orange and coral-red bracts. Whether you're treating yourself or looking for a living gift that's a little different from the usual bunch of flowers, this fiery little beauty is sure to make an impression!

The Details

• Botanical Name: Bromeliaceae family (likely Vriesea hybrid)
• Common Name: Bromeliad
• Pot Size: 140mm Nursery Pot
• Plant Type: Tropical Flowering Bromeliad

Light

Prefers bright, indirect light to encourage healthy growth and maintain its vibrant flower spike. Gentle morning sunlight is generally well tolerated, but avoid harsh, direct afternoon sun, which can scorch the foliage and fade the colourful bracts. A bright position near a window with filtered light is ideal.

Watering

Bromeliads have a slightly different approach to watering than many traditional houseplants! Their leaves form a central rosette, often referred to as a cup or tank, which can collect and hold water.

For tank-forming varieties, keep a small amount of fresh water in the central cup, refreshing it regularly to prevent stagnation. Water the potting mix lightly when the upper layer begins to dry, allowing excess water to drain away. Avoid constantly saturated potting mix, which can lead to root rot.

During cooler conditions or in poorly ventilated spaces, reduce water held in the central cup to minimise the risk of rot. Avoid allowing water to sit around the developing flower spike for extended periods.

Feeding

Feed year-round with a very diluted, balanced liquid fertiliser to support healthy foliage and developing offsets. Bromeliads are naturally light feeders, so a weak solution applied occasionally is generally sufficient. Reduce feeding frequency during periods of slower growth and avoid allowing concentrated fertiliser to accumulate in the central cup.

Growing

Prefers a loose, airy, well-draining potting mix, such as a blend containing orchid bark and other free-draining materials. Many ornamental Bromeliads are naturally epiphytic, meaning they grow attached to trees and other surfaces rather than in traditional garden soil.

Enjoys warm temperatures, good airflow and moderate humidity. Protect from cold draughts and frost, particularly during Melbourne's cooler months. Its relatively compact root system means it generally doesn't require frequent repotting.

Pet Friendly?

Many commonly grown ornamental Bromeliads, including Vriesea varieties, are considered non-toxic to cats and dogs. However, as the exact genus and cultivar of this plant haven't been confirmed, we can't guarantee its species-specific pet safety. It's always best to keep plants away from curious pets that enjoy nibbling on foliage.

Good to Know

Here's something fascinating about Bromeliads: each mature rosette generally flowers only once in its lifetime! But don't worry, that doesn't mean the end of your plant.

After flowering, the original rosette will gradually begin to decline, often producing little baby plants known as pups around its base. These offsets can be left to grow into a beautiful clump or carefully separated once they've developed sufficiently.

The spectacular orange and coral-red parts of the flower spike are primarily bracts, which tend to remain attractive much longer than the small flowers themselves. As the spike naturally fades, it can be removed with clean, sharp snips to keep the plant looking tidy.

• We photograph as many of our plants as possible; however, some listings may occasionally use supplier images.

• As plants are living things, every plant is unique and natural variations in size, colour and fullness should be expected.

• The plant you receive may not be the exact one pictured, but we'll always hand-pick a beautiful, healthy plant we'd happily display in our own home.
