Product Description

A little bit of pink, a whole lot of personality! The Beauty Star Calathea is one of those plants that makes you stop and take a closer look. With its gorgeous dark green leaves, vibrant lime-green markings and delicate pink pinstripes, this tropical beauty certainly knows how to dress to impress.

Its elongated, slightly wavy leaves feature an intricate combination of colours, with deep green edges framing lighter green centres and fine pinkish stripes adding a beautiful finishing touch. Flip those leaves over and you'll discover another surprise: rich purple-toned undersides that make this plant just as interesting from every angle.

Growing in a naturally upright, bushy habit, Beauty Star is perfect for adding a splash of colour and texture to a plant shelf, side table or indoor jungle. And like other Calatheas, it's part of the fascinating prayer plant family, with leaves that gently move in response to changing light throughout the day.

The Details

• Botanical Name: Goeppertia ornata 'Beauty Star'
• Common Name: Beauty Star Calathea, Prayer Plant
• Pot Size: 130mm Nursery Pot
• Plant Type: Evergreen tropical foliage plant

Light

Prefers medium to bright, indirect light, where its beautiful leaf patterns and colours can really shine. A position near an east-facing window or slightly back from a bright north-facing window is ideal.

Beauty Star can tolerate lower light conditions, although growth may slow and its colourful markings may become less pronounced. Avoid direct sunlight, particularly during the warmer afternoon hours, as this can scorch its delicate foliage and cause fading or crispy patches.

Watering

Keep the potting mix consistently lightly moist, allowing the upper centimetre or two to begin drying before watering again. Calatheas appreciate regular moisture but don't enjoy sitting in waterlogged soil, so good drainage is essential.

Water thoroughly and allow any excess to drain away. Avoid letting the potting mix dry out completely, as prolonged dryness can lead to curling leaves and crispy edges.

Beauty Star can be sensitive to minerals and salts in tap water. If you notice persistent brown leaf tips despite otherwise suitable care, consider using rainwater or filtered water.

Feeding

Feed year-round with a diluted, balanced liquid fertiliser to support healthy foliage and steady growth. Adjust the frequency according to its growth rate, feeding less often during cooler periods when growth naturally slows.

Calatheas can be sensitive to fertiliser build-up, so gentle feeding is best. Avoid applying strong fertiliser solutions, and occasionally flush the potting mix with clean water to help reduce accumulated salts.

Growing

Beauty Star grows in an upright, clumping habit, producing new leaves from the base of the plant. Over time, it can develop into a beautifully full specimen with layers of colourful foliage.

It thrives in warm, humid conditions with stable temperatures and protection from cold draughts. Moderate to high humidity is particularly beneficial for keeping its leaves looking their best.

Plant in a moisture-retentive but well-draining potting mix that provides both airflow around the roots and consistent moisture. Keep it away from heaters, air conditioners and other sources of dry, moving air.

Pet Friendly?

Yes! Beauty Star Calathea is considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, making it a lovely choice for households with curious furry friends.

While it's pet-friendly, it's still best to discourage nibbling, as eating any plant material can occasionally cause mild digestive upset.

Good to Know

Beauty Star belongs to the prayer plant family, Marantaceae, and exhibits a fascinating behaviour known as nyctinasty. Its leaves naturally adjust their position in response to changes in light, often becoming more upright during the evening and relaxing again during the day.

The delicate pink stripes are particularly noticeable on younger foliage and may become softer or less pronounced as leaves mature. This is a normal part of the plant's development.

Like many Calatheas, Beauty Star can be a little particular about its environment. Crispy leaf edges are commonly associated with low humidity, inconsistent watering or mineral sensitivity, while curling leaves can indicate moisture stress or excessive light.

Consistency is the secret to keeping this beauty happy. Find it a warm spot with gentle light, maintain steady moisture and avoid frequently changing its position.

• We photograph as many of our plants as possible; however, some listings may occasionally use supplier images.

• As plants are living things, every plant is unique and natural variations in size, colour and fullness should be expected.

• The plant you receive may not be the exact one pictured, but we'll always hand-pick a beautiful, healthy plant we'd happily display in our own home.
