The Details

• Botanical Name: Goeppertia roseopicta 'White Cloud' (syn. Calathea roseopicta)
• Common Name: White Cloud Calathea
• Pot Size: 70mm Nursery Pot
• Plant Type: Tropical evergreen foliage perennial

Light

White Cloud thrives in bright, indirect light, where its beautiful pink colouring and intricate leaf patterns can really shine. A position near an east-facing window or slightly back from a bright north-facing window is ideal.

Like many Calatheas, it can tolerate medium indirect light, although growth may slow and the foliage colours may become less vibrant. Avoid harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the delicate leaves and cause their beautiful pink tones to fade.

For the best results, provide consistent, filtered light throughout the day and avoid sudden changes in its growing environment.

Watering

Keep the potting mix evenly and lightly moist, allowing the upper 1–2cm to begin drying before watering again. White Cloud appreciates consistent moisture but doesn't enjoy sitting in soggy soil, so good drainage is essential.

Because this plant comes in a small 70mm nursery pot, the mix can dry out relatively quickly, particularly during warmer weather. Check the moisture regularly rather than following a strict watering schedule.

Calatheas can be sensitive to minerals and chemicals in tap water. If you notice persistent brown leaf tips despite otherwise suitable care, consider using filtered or rainwater.

During cooler periods, reduce watering frequency slightly as growth slows, while avoiding prolonged periods of complete dryness.

Feeding

Feed year-round with a diluted, balanced liquid fertiliser to support healthy foliage and maintain strong, vibrant growth.

White Cloud responds best to gentle, regular feeding rather than heavy applications. Adjust the frequency according to the plant's growth rate, feeding more regularly during warmer, active growing periods and less frequently through cooler months.

Avoid excessive fertilising, as Calatheas can be sensitive to salt accumulation in the potting mix, which may contribute to browning leaf edges.

Growing

White Cloud is a compact, clump-forming tropical perennial that produces beautiful patterned leaves on individual stems emerging from its underground rhizomes. As it matures, new growth gradually fills out the plant, creating a fuller display of colourful foliage.

It prefers a moisture-retentive but well-aerated potting mix that provides a balance of hydration and drainage. A quality tropical mix containing ingredients such as coco coir, perlite and pumice is an excellent choice.

Warm temperatures and moderate to high humidity are particularly important for keeping its foliage looking its best. Aim for temperatures between approximately 18–27°C and protect the plant from cold draughts, heating vents and sudden temperature changes.

Higher humidity can help prevent crispy leaf edges, especially during Melbourne's drier indoor conditions. Grouping plants together or using a humidifier can be beneficial when household humidity is low.

Pet Friendly?

Yes! White Cloud Calathea is generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, making it a lovely choice for households with curious pets.

Although it's considered pet friendly, it's still best to discourage chewing, as eating large amounts of any plant material may cause mild digestive upset.

Good to Know

White Cloud is a member of the prayer plant family, known for its fascinating daily leaf movements. You may notice the foliage changing position throughout the day and becoming more upright in the evening as the plant responds to changing light conditions.

Its beautiful colouring can vary naturally between individual leaves, with some displaying deeper pink and mauve tones while others feature softer, silvery-green highlights. New leaves may also develop slightly different colours as they mature.

Like other Calatheas, White Cloud appreciates consistency. Sudden changes in temperature, humidity, watering or light can sometimes cause temporary leaf curling or browning, so finding a comfortable spot and keeping its care routine steady will help it thrive.

• As plants are living things, every plant is unique and natural variations in size, colour and fullness should be expected.
• The plant you receive may not be the exact one pictured, but we'll always hand-pick a beautiful, healthy plant we'd happily display in our own home.
