The Details

• Botanical Name: Chamaedorea elegans
• Common Name: Parlour Palm
• Pot Size: 90mm Nursery Pot
• Plant Type: Tropical evergreen palm

Light

Parlour Palms thrive in bright, indirect light but are particularly well known for their ability to tolerate moderate and lower light conditions.

For the healthiest growth, position your palm near a window where it receives plenty of filtered natural light. Gentle morning sunlight is generally well tolerated, although prolonged exposure to direct afternoon sun can scorch its delicate fronds.

In lower light positions, growth will naturally slow, and the plant may produce fewer new fronds. While it can adapt to less brightly lit rooms, it still requires some natural light to remain healthy.

Watering

Parlour Palms prefer their potting mix to remain lightly moist during active growth, without becoming constantly wet or waterlogged.

Water thoroughly when the top 2–3cm of soil feels dry, allowing any excess water to drain freely from the nursery pot.

During warmer months, check the soil more regularly, as the plant may use water faster. In cooler weather, allow the potting mix to dry a little further between waterings to prevent excess moisture around the roots.

Avoid allowing the plant to sit in standing water, as prolonged saturation can lead to root rot. Brown, crispy leaf tips can develop from inconsistent watering, dry air or mineral and fertiliser salt build-up.

Feeding

Feed your Parlour Palm year-round with a balanced liquid fertiliser at a diluted strength to support healthy foliage and steady growth.

During spring and summer, fertilise approximately every four weeks while the plant is actively growing.

In autumn and winter, reduce feeding to approximately every six to eight weeks, depending on indoor temperatures and the amount of new growth.

Parlour Palms are relatively light feeders, so avoid excessive fertilising, which can contribute to brown leaf tips and salt accumulation in the soil.

Growing

Chamaedorea elegans is a naturally slow-growing, understory palm that develops slender, upright stems topped with graceful, pinnate fronds.

In its natural habitat, it grows beneath the forest canopy, which explains its preference for filtered light and its ability to adapt to typical indoor conditions.

Indoors, Parlour Palms generally remain manageable in size, although mature plants can eventually reach approximately 1–2 metres tall when given suitable growing conditions and plenty of time.

They prefer temperatures between approximately 18–27°C and appreciate moderate humidity. While they generally adapt well to normal household conditions, additional humidity can help prevent dry leaf tips, particularly during winter heating or hot, dry weather.

Plant into a quality, well-draining indoor potting mix that retains some moisture while allowing air to circulate around the roots. Avoid unnecessarily large pots, as excess soil can remain wet for too long.

Parlour Palms don't require regular pruning. Simply remove any fully yellow or brown fronds at the base using clean scissors, and rotate the pot occasionally to encourage balanced growth.

Pet Friendly?

Yes! Parlour Palms are considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, making them a lovely option for homes with curious four-legged family members.

Although they're pet-friendly, it's still best to discourage chewing, as eating large amounts of any plant material can cause mild digestive upset.

Good to Know

Despite its delicate appearance, the Parlour Palm is one of the more forgiving indoor palms. Its slow growth and ability to tolerate moderate light make it a particularly practical choice for smaller homes, apartments and indoor plant collections.

Unlike some larger palms, Chamaedorea elegans won't quickly outgrow its position. With consistent care, it can remain a beautiful indoor companion for many years.

Individual fronds naturally age and eventually turn yellow or brown as new growth develops. This is part of the plant's normal growth cycle, although widespread yellowing can indicate a watering or environmental issue.

• We photograph as many of our plants as possible; however, some listings may occasionally use supplier images.
• As plants are living things, every plant is unique and natural variations in size, colour and fullness should be expected.
• The plant you receive may not be the exact one pictured, but we'll always hand-pick a beautiful, healthy plant we'd happily display in our own home.
