Product Description

Wild, woolly and wonderfully weird! The Monkey Tail Cactus is one of those plants that makes you look twice, and then immediately want one for yourself.

With its long, trailing stems covered in a soft-looking blanket of fine, golden-white hairs, Cleistocactus colademononis is an absolute showstopper. Its fuzzy stems spill over the edges of the pot, creating a spectacular cascading display that looks just like a collection of fluffy monkey tails.

Native to the mountainous regions of Bolivia, this unusual cactus grows naturally on rocky cliffs, where its stems hang freely in search of sunlight. As it matures, those incredible tails can grow remarkably long, transforming an already eye-catching plant into a seriously impressive hanging feature.

And there's more! Established plants can produce beautiful, vibrant red flowers along their stems, adding a gorgeous splash of colour against the golden hairs.

Perfect for hanging baskets, elevated shelves or bright sunny positions, the Monkey Tail Cactus brings a little bit of the unexpected to any plant collection.

Why You'll Love It

• Long, fuzzy, golden-white stems create an unforgettable monkey-tail appearance.
• Spectacular cascading growth makes it perfect for hanging baskets and elevated displays.
• Mature plants can produce beautiful, vibrant red flowers.
• Drought-tolerant and relatively low-maintenance once established.
• A wonderfully unusual collector's cactus that only gets more impressive with age.

The Details

• Botanical Name: Cleistocactus colademononis
• Common Name: Monkey Tail Cactus
• Pot Size: 130mm Nursery Pot
• Plant Type: Trailing Epiphytic and Lithophytic Cactus

Light

The Monkey Tail Cactus loves plenty of bright natural light and will reward a sunny position with strong, healthy growth.

Position it near a bright north-facing or east-facing window where it can receive several hours of gentle direct sunlight. Morning sun is particularly beneficial, helping maintain compact growth and encouraging flowering as the plant matures.

Although this cactus appreciates sunlight, its natural habitat includes rocky cliff faces where plants can receive some protection from intense exposure. Avoid suddenly placing it in harsh afternoon sun, particularly during Melbourne's hotter summer months.

If moving your Monkey Tail Cactus into a sunnier position, introduce direct sunlight gradually to prevent scorching.

Insufficient light may result in thinner, weaker growth and reduced flowering.

Watering

While the Monkey Tail Cactus is drought-tolerant, it appreciates a little more regular watering during its active growing season than many traditional desert cacti.

Allow the potting mix to dry out thoroughly, or almost thoroughly, between waterings. Once sufficiently dry, water deeply and allow excess moisture to drain away completely.

During spring and summer, check the soil more frequently, particularly if the plant is growing in a warm, bright position. Hanging pots can dry out faster due to increased airflow around the container.

As temperatures cool during autumn and winter, reduce watering significantly and allow the mix to remain dry for longer between drinks.

Avoid leaving the pot sitting in water, as prolonged moisture around the roots can quickly lead to rot.

The best approach is to check the potting mix rather than relying on a fixed watering schedule.

Feeding

Feed with a diluted, balanced liquid fertiliser approximately every 4–6 weeks throughout spring and summer to support healthy stem development and encourage flowering.

A fertiliser formulated for cacti and succulents, particularly one that isn't excessively high in nitrogen, is a great option.

During autumn and winter, reduce feeding considerably or pause while the plant is resting, especially if temperatures are cool and growth has slowed.

Avoid overfertilising, as this can encourage soft, weak growth rather than the strong, healthy stems you're looking for.

Growing

The Monkey Tail Cactus is a naturally trailing species that develops long, cylindrical stems covered in fine, hair-like spines.

Unlike upright columnar cacti, its stems are designed to hang and cascade, making it particularly well suited to hanging baskets and elevated displays.

As the plant matures, individual stems can eventually reach lengths of over a metre in favourable conditions, creating an impressive curtain of fuzzy growth.

Its golden-white hairs help protect the green stems beneath from intense sunlight. Although they look soft and fluffy, fine spines are present, so handle the plant carefully.

Mature plants may produce striking red, tubular flowers along their stems, particularly when provided with plenty of light and suitable seasonal growing conditions.

Plant into a loose, airy and fast-draining potting mix that allows excess water to escape easily. A combination of quality potting material with mineral ingredients such as pumice, perlite or coarse grit is ideal.

Good airflow around the stems and roots is important, and the plant should be protected from prolonged wet conditions and frost.

When repotting, choose a container with drainage holes and avoid unnecessarily disturbing the delicate trailing stems.

Pet Friendly?

Not considered chemically toxic to cats or dogs, but physical irritation is possible.

The Monkey Tail Cactus isn't generally recognised as poisonous to pets. However, despite its fluffy appearance, its stems are covered in fine spines that can irritate skin, mouths and paws.

Curious pets may also be tempted to investigate its long, dangling stems.

For this reason, we recommend displaying your Monkey Tail Cactus in a hanging basket or another position safely out of reach of pets and small children.

Good to Know

The Monkey Tail Cactus is native to Bolivia, where it naturally grows along rocky cliffs and steep slopes. Its fluffy golden-white hairs are actually modified spines that help protect the plant from strong sunlight.

The fine hairs may look soft, but they can still cause irritation, so take care when handling or repotting.

Mature plants can produce beautiful red flowers, although flowering depends on age, light levels and growing conditions. The long, trailing stems are naturally flexible but can be damaged if bent or handled roughly.

A hanging position allows the stems to develop their natural cascading shape without becoming tangled or compressed.

• We photograph as many of our plants as possible; however, some listings may occasionally use supplier images.
• As plants are living things, every plant is unique and natural variations in size, colour and fullness should be expected.
• The plant you receive may not be the exact one pictured, but we'll always hand-pick a beautiful, healthy plant we'd happily display in our own home.
