Product Description

A little ivy with plenty of charm! The Dwarf English Ivy is a compact, climbing and trailing beauty with glossy, star-shaped leaves and a fresh mix of vibrant lime-green and deeper green foliage. Small in size but full of character, it's a lovely way to bring a touch of classic greenery into your home.

This miniature form of English Ivy features smaller leaves and a more compact growth habit than its larger relatives. New growth emerges in bright, almost chartreuse green before gradually deepening in colour, creating a beautiful contrast throughout the plant. Its delicate, pointed leaves and slender stems give it a wonderfully fresh, woodland-inspired appearance.

Perfect for terrariums, small decorative pots, shelves and hanging displays, Dwarf English Ivy is a versatile little plant that can be encouraged to climb or allowed to trail. With bright indirect light, consistent moisture and a little humidity, it'll happily grow into a lovely leafy feature.

• Compact growth makes it ideal for smaller spaces and terrariums.
• Versatile climbing or trailing habit for creative indoor styling.
• Bright new foliage adds a lovely contrast against mature leaves.
• A classic evergreen plant with plenty of character.

The Details

• Botanical Name: Hedera helix
• Common Name: Dwarf English Ivy
• Pot Size: 70mm Nursery Pot
• Plant Type: Evergreen climbing and trailing vine

Light

Dwarf English Ivy grows best in bright, indirect light, although it can tolerate moderate light conditions.

Position it near an east-facing window for gentle morning sunlight, or in a well-lit room where it receives plenty of filtered natural light.

While ivy can adapt to lower light levels, growth may become slower and more stretched, with fewer leaves along the stems.

Avoid prolonged exposure to harsh afternoon sunlight, particularly through glass, as this can scorch the foliage. Gentle morning sun is generally well tolerated.

Watering

Dwarf English Ivy prefers its potting mix to remain lightly and consistently moist without becoming waterlogged.

Water thoroughly when the top 1–2cm of soil begins to feel dry, allowing any excess water to drain freely.

During spring and summer, check moisture levels regularly, particularly in smaller nursery pots, which can dry out quickly. Reduce watering frequency during cooler months as growth slows and the soil takes longer to dry.

Avoid allowing the plant to sit in standing water, as constantly saturated roots can lead to root rot.

Both excessive dryness and overwatering can cause leaf drop, so aim for a comfortable balance between the two.

Feeding

Feed year-round with a balanced liquid fertiliser diluted to approximately half the manufacturer's recommended strength.

During spring and summer, fertilise every three to four weeks to encourage healthy foliage and steady growth.

In autumn and winter, reduce feeding to approximately every six to eight weeks, depending on the plant's growth rate and growing conditions.

Avoid overfertilising, particularly while the plant is young or growing in a small nursery pot.

Growing

Dwarf English Ivy is a compact form of Hedera helix, a versatile evergreen vine known for its distinctive lobed leaves and ability to climb or trail.

The plant in our photographs features small, pointed, star-shaped leaves with a lovely mix of bright lime-green new growth and glossy, darker green mature foliage.

As it develops, its slender stems can be allowed to cascade over the edge of a pot or trained to grow around a small support. Regular trimming encourages branching and helps maintain a fuller, bushier appearance.

It prefers cool to moderately warm conditions, ideally around 15–24°C, and appreciates good airflow with moderate humidity. Keep it away from heaters and hot, dry air, which can encourage spider mites and cause the foliage to dry out.

For best results, use a quality, well-draining indoor potting mix that retains some moisture while allowing air to circulate around the roots.

Its compact size makes it suitable for larger terrariums and enclosed plant displays, although good ventilation is important to prevent excessive moisture and fungal problems.

Pet Friendly?

No. Dwarf English Ivy is toxic to cats and dogs if ingested.

The foliage contains compounds that can cause irritation, excessive drooling, vomiting and gastrointestinal upset.

If you have curious pets that enjoy nibbling plants, we recommend keeping this one well out of reach or choosing a pet-friendly alternative.

Good to Know

Although it's commonly grown indoors, English Ivy is naturally a vigorous climbing plant. Even compact forms can develop longer stems over time, so occasional trimming is a great way to maintain its miniature appearance.

The bright lime-green foliage visible in our photographs is fresh new growth, which naturally develops deeper green tones as the leaves mature.

English Ivy is also a declared environmental weed in parts of Australia, including Victoria. If growing outdoors, keep it contained and prevent it from spreading into surrounding gardens or natural areas.

• We photograph as many of our plants as possible; however, some listings may occasionally use supplier images.
• As plants are living things, every plant is unique and natural variations in size, colour and fullness should be expected.
• The plant you receive may not be the exact one pictured, but we'll always hand-pick a beautiful, healthy plant we'd happily display in our own home.
