Product Description

Small fern, big personality! The Emina Fern is a wonderfully quirky little beauty with bright green, tightly curled fronds that look like they've been given a fabulous ruffled makeover. With its playful texture and compact growth, this is one fern that certainly doesn't blend into the background!

A distinctive variety of the Boston Fern, Nephrolepis exaltata 'Emina' swaps the traditional long, feathery fronds for shorter, upright growth covered in densely packed, crinkled foliage. Its vibrant green colouring and intricate, almost miniature tree-like appearance make it a fantastic choice for adding texture and interest to your indoor jungle.

Perfect for terrariums, small decorative pots, shelves or tucked into a collection of tropical plants, this little character loves a warm, humid environment. Give it the right conditions and it'll reward you with a lush display of beautifully textured greenery.

The Details

• Botanical Name: Nephrolepis exaltata 'Emina'
• Common Name: Emina Fern
• Pot Size: 70mm Nursery Pot
• Plant Type: Tropical evergreen fern

Light

The Emina Fern thrives in bright, indirect light, where it can maintain its vibrant colouring and beautifully compact growth.

An east-facing window with gentle morning sunlight is ideal, or position it in a well-lit room away from harsh direct afternoon sun.

It can tolerate moderate indirect light, making it suitable for a range of indoor positions. However, prolonged low-light conditions may result in slower growth and less dense foliage.

Avoid intense direct sunlight, which can scorch its delicate fronds and cause the edges to become dry or brown.

Watering

Like most tropical ferns, the Emina Fern appreciates consistent moisture and doesn't enjoy being left to dry out completely.

Water thoroughly when the very top layer of potting mix begins to feel slightly dry, ensuring excess water can drain freely from the nursery pot.

During warmer months, check the soil regularly, as smaller pots can dry out surprisingly quickly. In cooler weather, reduce watering frequency slightly while maintaining lightly moist conditions.

Avoid allowing the potting mix to become waterlogged, as constantly saturated roots can lead to rot.

If the fronds begin to look dry, crispy or lose their vibrant appearance, check both the soil moisture and surrounding humidity.

Feeding

Feed year-round with a balanced liquid fertiliser diluted to approximately half the manufacturer's recommended strength.

During spring and summer, fertilise every three to four weeks to support healthy new fronds and maintain its lush green appearance.

In autumn and winter, reduce feeding to approximately every six to eight weeks, depending on the plant's growth rate and indoor conditions.

Ferns can be sensitive to excessive fertiliser, so lighter, regular applications are preferable to strong concentrations.

Growing

Nephrolepis exaltata 'Emina' is a compact, curly-leaved cultivar of the Boston Fern, prized for its unusual, densely ruffled foliage.

Unlike traditional Boston Ferns, which develop long, arching fronds, Emina produces shorter, more upright growth with tightly curled leaflets. This creates a wonderfully bushy, textured appearance that resembles a miniature green forest.

It prefers warm temperatures between approximately 18–27°C and thrives in moderate to high humidity. Bathrooms with good natural light, sheltered indoor plant displays and larger terrariums can provide excellent growing conditions.

Keep it away from cold draughts, heaters and air-conditioning vents, as dry air can cause the delicate foliage to develop crispy edges.

For best results, plant it in a moisture-retentive but well-draining tropical potting mix. A combination of premium potting mix, coco coir, perlite and other aerating ingredients helps provide the balance of moisture and oxygen its roots need.

As the plant matures, it gradually develops a fuller, denser appearance. Remove any old or damaged fronds at the base to keep it looking fresh and encourage healthy new growth.

Pet Friendly?

Yes! Nephrolepis exaltata 'Emina' is generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, making it a fantastic option for pet-friendly households.

Although it's considered pet-safe, it's still best to discourage chewing, as consuming large amounts of plant material can occasionally cause mild digestive upset.

Good to Know

The Emina Fern is a cultivated variety of the familiar Boston Fern, but its tightly curled, ruffled fronds give it a completely different appearance. Its unusual foliage is a natural characteristic of the cultivar, not a sign of damage or poor health.

Because of its compact size and love of humidity, it's particularly well suited to terrariums and smaller indoor plant displays. In enclosed terrariums, ensure there is some airflow and avoid keeping the potting mix excessively wet.

The plant shown in our photographs features a beautiful mix of bright lime-green new growth and deeper green mature fronds. Slight differences in colour, curl and fullness are completely natural.

• We photograph as many of our plants as possible; however, some listings may occasionally use supplier images.
• As plants are living things, every plant is unique and natural variations in size, colour and fullness should be expected.
• The plant you receive may not be the exact one pictured, but we'll always hand-pick a beautiful, healthy plant we'd happily display in our own home.
