The Details

• Botanical Name: Ficus benjamina 'Midnight Beauty'
• Common Name: Midnight Beauty Weeping Fig, Weeping Fig
• Pot Size: 200mm Nursery Pot
• Plant Type: Evergreen tropical tree

Light

Prefers bright, indirect light and will appreciate a position with plenty of natural brightness throughout the day. Gentle morning sunlight is generally beneficial and can help encourage strong, compact growth.

While it can tolerate medium light conditions, growth may become slower and less dense. Avoid harsh afternoon sunlight through glass, particularly if the plant hasn't been gradually acclimatised.

Ficus benjamina also prefers consistency, so try to avoid frequently moving it between different lighting conditions.

Watering

Allow the top few centimetres of potting mix to dry before watering thoroughly. The Midnight Beauty prefers evenly managed moisture rather than constantly wet soil or prolonged periods of dryness.

Water until excess moisture drains from the bottom of the nursery pot, then allow it to drain completely. Never leave the plant sitting in a saucer of water, as waterlogged roots can lead to yellowing leaves and root problems.

Adjust your watering frequency according to the season, indoor temperature and how quickly the potting mix dries.

Feeding

Feed year-round with a diluted, balanced liquid fertiliser to support healthy foliage and steady growth. Adjust the frequency according to its growth rate, feeding less often during cooler periods when growth naturally slows.

Avoid applying fertiliser to excessively dry soil, and don't overfeed, as excessive nutrients can cause salt build-up and damage the roots.

Growing

The Midnight Beauty is a naturally branching tropical tree that can develop into a beautiful, substantial indoor feature over time. Its gently arching branches give it the graceful appearance that Weeping Figs are known for.

Plant into a quality, well-draining indoor potting mix that retains some moisture while allowing excess water to escape. It enjoys warm temperatures, moderate humidity and protection from cold draughts, heaters and air-conditioning vents.

Light pruning can help maintain its shape and encourage bushier growth. Rotate the pot occasionally to promote even growth, but avoid making sudden changes to its overall growing environment.

Pet Friendly?

Unfortunately, no. Ficus benjamina is toxic to cats and dogs if chewed or ingested, and its milky sap can cause skin irritation in sensitive individuals.

Keep this one away from curious pets and little hands, and consider wearing gloves when pruning.

Good to Know

Weeping Figs have a bit of a reputation for dropping leaves when their environment changes, and the Midnight Beauty is no exception! Moving house, changes in light, temperature fluctuations or inconsistent watering can all trigger some leaf drop.

The good news is that this doesn't necessarily mean something is wrong. Once the plant settles into a stable position with suitable care, it will often produce fresh growth to replace lost foliage.

Its beautiful dark green leaves are one of its standout features, with new growth often emerging a much brighter shade before gradually deepening as it matures.

For the happiest Ficus, find it a bright, comfortable spot and resist the temptation to keep moving it around. Consistency really is the secret to success with this one.
