The Details

• Botanical Name: Fittonia albivenis 'Red Cloud'
• Common Name: Red Cloud Nerve Plant
• Pot Size: 70mm Nursery Pot
• Plant Type: Tropical evergreen foliage perennial

Light

Red Cloud thrives in bright, indirect light, which helps maintain its vibrant red and pink colouring while encouraging healthy, compact growth. A position near an east-facing window or slightly back from a bright north-facing window is ideal.

It can also tolerate medium indirect light, although growth may slow and the foliage colours may become less intense. Avoid prolonged exposure to harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the delicate leaves and cause their beautiful colouring to fade.

Consistent, filtered light is ideal for keeping the foliage looking its best.

Watering

Keep the potting mix lightly and consistently moist, allowing just the surface to begin drying before watering again. Fittonias are moisture-loving tropical plants and don't appreciate being left completely dry for extended periods.

When the plant becomes thirsty, its leaves may suddenly droop or collapse, sometimes quite dramatically! Fortunately, a healthy Fittonia will often perk back up after a thorough watering, provided it hasn't been allowed to remain dry for too long.

Water thoroughly when needed, allowing excess moisture to drain freely from the nursery pot. Avoid leaving the plant sitting in waterlogged soil, as consistently saturated conditions can lead to root rot.

Because this plant comes in a small 70mm nursery pot, the mix may dry relatively quickly, particularly during warmer weather. Check moisture levels regularly rather than following a fixed watering schedule.

Feeding

Feed year-round with a diluted, balanced liquid fertiliser to encourage healthy foliage, vibrant colouring and steady growth.

Fittonias have relatively modest nutritional requirements, so gentle, regular feeding is preferable to strong applications. Adjust the frequency according to the plant's growth rate, feeding more regularly during warmer, active growing periods and less frequently through cooler months.

Avoid excessive fertilising, as a build-up of salts in the potting mix can damage the delicate roots and contribute to browning leaf edges.

Growing

Red Cloud is a compact, low-growing tropical perennial that naturally develops a spreading, bushy habit. Its small, colourful leaves grow along slender stems, gradually creating a lush carpet of beautifully patterned foliage.

It prefers a moisture-retentive but well-aerated potting mix that provides consistent hydration without becoming waterlogged. A quality tropical mix containing ingredients such as coco coir, perlite and pumice is an excellent choice.

Warm temperatures between approximately 18–27°C and moderate to high humidity encourage healthy growth. Fittonias particularly appreciate humid environments, making them well suited to terrariums and sheltered indoor spaces.

Protect the plant from cold draughts, heating vents and sudden temperature changes. Low humidity or inconsistent watering can cause the delicate foliage to wilt or develop crispy edges.

As the plant matures, stems may begin spreading beyond the edges of the pot. Pinching back longer stems can encourage branching and help maintain a fuller, more compact appearance.

Pet Friendly?

Yes! Red Cloud Nerve Plants are generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, making them a lovely choice for households with curious pets.

Although they're considered pet friendly, it's still best to discourage chewing, as consuming large amounts of any plant material may cause mild digestive upset.

Good to Know

Fittonias are affectionately known as Nerve Plants because of the intricate network of colourful veins running through their foliage. Red Cloud takes this characteristic to another level with its brilliant red and pink markings, which can vary naturally in intensity between individual leaves.

These plants are also famous for their dramatic response to dryness. If your Red Cloud suddenly looks like it's given up on life, check the potting mix! A thirsty Fittonia will often recover after watering, although repeated wilting can eventually damage the foliage.

Red Cloud is particularly well suited to terrariums, where consistent humidity and moisture can help maintain its beautiful foliage. If growing in an enclosed terrarium, monitor moisture carefully and avoid keeping the substrate excessively wet.

• We photograph as many of our plants as possible; however, some listings may occasionally use supplier images.
• As plants are living things, every plant is unique and natural variations in size, colour and fullness should be expected.
• The plant you receive may not be the exact one pictured, but we'll always hand-pick a beautiful, healthy plant we'd happily display in our own home.
