Product Description

Small plant, big personality! The Tiger Nerve Plant is a little foliage superstar with an eye-catching pattern that's impossible to ignore.

Featuring rich, deep green leaves decorated with striking creamy-white veins, this gorgeous little Fittonia looks like someone has carefully painted an intricate pattern across every leaf. The bright markings branch out from the centre, creating a beautiful contrast against the darker green edges and giving the foliage its wonderfully distinctive appearance.

With its compact, spreading growth habit and love of humidity, Tiger is a fantastic choice for terrariums, small decorative planters and those little spaces that need a splash of greenery. It's a particularly lovely addition to a collection of miniature tropical plants, bringing plenty of texture and personality without taking up much room.

The Details

• Botanical Name: Fittonia albivenis
• Common Name: Tiger Nerve Plant
• Pot Size: 70mm Nursery Pot
• Plant Type: Tropical foliage houseplant

Light

Tiger Nerve Plant thrives in bright, indirect light, which helps maintain its vibrant green foliage and beautiful creamy-white markings.

Position it near an east-facing window where it can enjoy gentle morning light, or slightly back from a bright north-facing window where sunlight is filtered.

It can also tolerate moderate indirect light, making it a versatile option for indoor displays. However, very low light may cause slower growth, smaller leaves and a more stretched appearance.

Avoid harsh direct sunlight, particularly during the warmer months, as the delicate leaves can scorch, fade or develop crispy edges.

Watering

Tiger prefers its potting mix to remain consistently lightly moist, but never waterlogged.

Water thoroughly when the upper centimetre or so of the mix begins to feel dry, allowing any excess water to drain freely from the nursery pot.

Fittonias are famous for being a little dramatic when they're thirsty! If the soil becomes too dry, the leaves may suddenly droop or wilt. Fortunately, they often recover quickly after a good drink, provided they haven't been left dry for too long.

During spring and summer, check moisture levels regularly, as warmer temperatures and active growth may increase watering requirements.

In autumn and winter, watering frequency can be reduced slightly, but avoid allowing the entire root ball to dry out completely.

Consistently soggy soil can lead to root rot, so aim for an even balance of moisture and aeration.

Feeding

Feed year-round with a balanced liquid fertiliser diluted to approximately half the recommended strength.

During spring and summer, fertilise every three to four weeks to support healthy foliage development and encourage a full, compact growth habit.

In autumn and winter, reduce feeding to approximately every six to eight weeks, adjusting according to the plant's growth rate and indoor conditions.

Fittonias have relatively delicate roots, so gentle, consistent feeding is preferable to strong fertiliser applications.

Growing

Tiger Nerve Plant is a compact, low-growing tropical perennial prized for its beautifully patterned foliage.

Its small, oval leaves feature a deep green background with striking creamy-white veins that branch out towards the leaf margins. The plant naturally develops a spreading habit, producing multiple stems that gradually create a dense, leafy mound.

As it matures, stems may begin to creep over the edges of the pot, making it a lovely choice for small planters, terrarium landscapes and miniature tropical arrangements.

Tiger thrives in warm temperatures, ideally between 18–27°C, and appreciates moderate to high humidity. Protect it from cold draughts, sudden temperature changes and direct exposure to heating or air-conditioning vents.

Plant in a moisture-retentive but well-aerated tropical potting mix that allows excess water to drain freely. A blend containing quality potting mix, coco coir and perlite works particularly well.

To maintain a bushy appearance, pinch back any stems that become overly long or leggy. Healthy stem cuttings can also be propagated to create new plants or fill out an existing pot.

Pet Friendly?

Yes! Tiger Nerve Plant is considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, making it a wonderful choice for pet-friendly households.

While it's not known to contain toxic compounds harmful to pets, it's still best to discourage curious animals from chewing on the foliage, as eating any plant material may cause mild digestive upset.

Good to Know

Tiger's distinctive creamy-white markings are a natural feature of its foliage. The pattern and intensity of the veining can vary slightly between individual leaves, giving every plant its own unique appearance.

Fittonias are particularly well suited to terrariums because they appreciate the increased humidity and relatively stable conditions these environments provide.

If growing Tiger in an enclosed terrarium, monitor moisture carefully and avoid allowing the substrate to become saturated. A humid environment is beneficial, but the roots still need access to oxygen.

Occasional pinching or trimming will encourage fresh growth and help maintain a neat, compact shape.

• We photograph as many of our plants as possible; however, some listings may occasionally use supplier images.
• As plants are living things, every plant is unique and natural variations in size, colour and fullness should be expected.
• The plant you receive may not be the exact one pictured, but we'll always hand-pick a beautiful, healthy plant we'd happily display in our own home.
