Product Description

A fern with furry feet? Yep, you read that right! Meet the Hare’s Foot Fern, a wonderfully quirky tropical beauty with delicate, finely divided green fronds and the most unusual little feature hiding beneath its foliage. Those fuzzy, creeping rhizomes look just like tiny hare’s feet, giving this charming fern its rather fitting name. A little bit wild, a little bit whimsical and absolutely full of character!

With its beautifully textured foliage and naturally spreading growth habit, Davallia fejeensis is perfect for adding a soft, woodland feel to your indoor plant collection. Its feathery fronds create a lovely contrast against broader-leaved plants, while those furry rhizomes gradually creep over the edges of the pot. Pop it on a shelf, display it in a decorative planter or let it spill gently from a hanging basket as it grows.

Unlike some of its fussier fern relatives, the Hare’s Foot Fern can be surprisingly forgiving once you've found its happy place. Give it bright, filtered light, a little humidity and a well-draining potting mix, and it'll reward you with fresh green growth and plenty of personality. A fantastic choice for fern lovers, curious collectors or anyone who appreciates a plant that's just a little different!

Why You'll Love It
  • Beautifully delicate, finely divided fronds that add softness and texture
  • Unique fuzzy rhizomes that resemble tiny hare’s feet
  • Naturally spreading growth that's perfect for shelves and hanging planters
  • A wonderfully quirky addition to any indoor plant collection
  • A rewarding fern that's relatively forgiving once established

The Details

• Botanical Name: Davallia fejeensis
• Common Name: Hare’s Foot Fern, Rabbit’s Foot Fern
• Pot Size: 125mm Nursery Pot
• Plant Type: Tropical Epiphytic Fern

Light

Prefers bright, indirect light to encourage healthy, lush growth. Can tolerate moderate light, although growth may slow. Avoid harsh, direct afternoon sunlight, which can scorch its delicate fronds. Gentle morning sunlight is generally well tolerated.

Watering

Water when the top layer of potting mix begins to dry, keeping the mix lightly moist without becoming waterlogged. Allow excess water to drain away and avoid leaving the pot sitting in water. Although more forgiving of brief dry periods than some ferns, prolonged dryness can cause crispy fronds.

Feeding

Feed year-round with a diluted, balanced liquid fertiliser to encourage healthy fronds and steady growth. Ferns are relatively light feeders, so use a weaker solution and reduce feeding frequency when growth slows.

Growing

Prefers a loose, airy, well-draining potting mix with plenty of organic matter, reflecting its naturally epiphytic growth habit. Enjoys warm temperatures and moderate to high humidity, although established plants can adapt to typical indoor conditions.

Its furry rhizomes naturally spread across the surface of the pot and eventually creep over the edges. Keep these rhizomes exposed rather than burying them beneath the potting mix, as covering them can encourage rot.

Pet Friendly?

Yes! Davallia fejeensis is generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, making it a lovely option for pet-friendly households. As with any plant, it's still best to discourage curious pets from chewing on the foliage.

Good to Know

Those furry little feet aren't roots or something to be worried about! They're actually rhizomes, specialised stems that help the plant spread and produce new fronds. Their soft, golden-brown covering is completely natural and one of the most charming features of this fern.

When repotting, choose a shallow, well-draining container where possible and allow the rhizomes to sit along the surface rather than burying them. As the plant matures, they'll gradually creep over the pot's edges, creating that wonderfully wild, cascading appearance.

• We photograph as many of our plants as possible; however, some listings may occasionally use supplier images.

• As plants are living things, every plant is unique and natural variations in size, colour and fullness should be expected.

• The plant you receive may not be the exact one pictured, but we'll always hand-pick a beautiful, healthy plant we'd happily display in our own home.
