Product Description

A little bit leafy, a little bit wild and a whole lot of character! Meet the Hoya elliptica, a gorgeous climbing plant that's all about its beautifully patterned foliage. With its oval-shaped leaves and intricate network of pale green veins, this tropical beauty brings something a little different to your indoor jungle.

The real magic is in the details. Each leaf features a distinctive pattern of lighter veins against a green background, creating an almost turtle-shell-like appearance. As the plant matures, its trailing and climbing stems produce more of these wonderfully detailed leaves, making it a fantastic choice for anyone who appreciates interesting foliage.

Displayed on a trellis, climbing support or allowed to trail from a hanging planter, the Hoya elliptica is a lovely addition to any plant collection. And with the right conditions, mature plants may even produce clusters of delicate, star-shaped flowers. A beautiful little bonus from an already charming plant!

Why You'll Love It

• Distinctive oval leaves with intricate, turtle-shell-like veining.

• A versatile climbing or trailing plant that's perfect for creative displays.

• Beautiful foliage that adds texture and interest to your indoor collection.

• May produce clusters of delicate, star-shaped flowers when mature.

• A wonderful addition for Hoya enthusiasts and foliage collectors.

The Details

• Botanical Name: Hoya elliptica
• Common Name: Hoya elliptica
• Pot Size: 100mm Nursery Pot
• Plant Type: Tropical evergreen climbing epiphyte

Light

Prefers bright, indirect light to encourage healthy growth and maintain its attractive leaf patterning. Gentle morning sunlight can be beneficial, but avoid prolonged exposure to harsh afternoon sun, which may scorch the foliage.

A position near a bright window with filtered light is ideal. Insufficient light can slow growth and reduce the likelihood of flowering.

Watering

Allow the upper portion of the potting mix to dry between waterings, then water thoroughly until excess moisture drains away.

Hoya elliptica prefers a balance of moisture and aeration around its roots rather than remaining constantly wet. Check the potting mix before watering, as its requirements will vary with temperature, light and the growing environment.

Feeding

Feed year-round with a diluted, balanced liquid fertiliser to support healthy foliage and steady growth.

Adjust feeding frequency according to the plant's growth rate, reducing applications during cooler periods when growth naturally slows. Avoid excessive fertiliser, particularly when the plant is growing slowly.

Growing

Hoya elliptica has a naturally climbing and trailing growth habit, making it well suited to trellises, hoops and hanging planters. Providing a support allows its vines to climb, while leaving them unsupported creates a more relaxed, cascading appearance.

Grow in a chunky, well-aerated potting mix that provides excellent drainage while retaining a little moisture. As an epiphytic Hoya, it benefits from an open growing medium that allows air to circulate around its roots.

It appreciates warm conditions and moderate to high humidity, although established plants can adapt to typical indoor environments. Protect it from cold draughts and sudden temperature changes.

Pet Friendly?

Hoya elliptica is generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, making it a suitable choice for pet-friendly households.

As with any houseplant, it's still best to discourage pets from chewing the foliage, as consuming plant material can occasionally cause mild digestive upset.

Good to Know

One of the most distinctive features of Hoya elliptica is its intricate leaf veining, often compared to the pattern of a turtle's shell. The visibility of these markings can vary between leaves, with newer growth sometimes appearing lighter before gradually deepening in colour.

Mature plants may produce rounded clusters of small, star-shaped flowers, often with a sweet fragrance. Flowering depends on plant maturity and growing conditions, so a little patience may be needed.

If your Hoya develops flowering spurs, known as peduncles, leave them attached after the flowers fade. Hoyas can produce additional flowers from these same structures.

• We photograph as many of our plants as possible; however, some listings may occasionally use supplier images.

• As plants are living things, every plant is unique and natural variations in size, colour and fullness should be expected.

• The plant you receive may not be the exact one pictured, but we'll always hand-pick a beautiful, healthy plant we'd happily display in our own home.
