Product Description

A little fern with a seriously fabulous fringe! The Leslie Bird's Nest Fern is anything but ordinary, bringing a playful twist to classic fern foliage with its beautifully ruffled, forked and frilly leaf tips.

With glossy, vibrant green fronds that grow from a central rosette, Asplenium antiquum 'Leslie' has a wonderfully sculptural appearance. Its leaves start relatively smooth towards the base before developing their distinctive curled and crested ends, creating a lush, textured display that becomes even more impressive as the plant matures.

Perfect for shelves, desks, bathrooms and smaller indoor spaces, this compact little beauty brings plenty of tropical personality without taking up much room. With the right balance of moisture, warmth and indirect light, it's a rewarding fern that makes a lovely addition to any indoor plant collection.

Why You'll Love It

• Beautifully ruffled and forked frond tips create a unique, frilly appearance.

• Glossy, vibrant green foliage adds a fresh tropical feel to indoor spaces.

• Compact rosette growth makes it perfect for shelves, desks and smaller displays.

• Develops increasingly impressive foliage as the plant matures.

• A wonderful choice for fern lovers and anyone who appreciates unusual foliage.

The Details

• Botanical Name: Asplenium antiquum 'Leslie'
• Common Name: Leslie Bird's Nest Fern
• Pot Size: 70mm Nursery Pot
• Plant Type: Tropical evergreen epiphytic fern

Light

Prefers bright, indirect light but can also adapt to moderate indirect light conditions. A position near a window with filtered sunlight is ideal, providing enough brightness to encourage healthy, vibrant green foliage without exposing the delicate fronds to harsh sunlight.

Gentle morning sunlight may be tolerated, but avoid strong afternoon sun, which can scorch the leaves and cause discolouration. In lower light conditions, growth may slow and the plant may require less frequent watering.

Watering

Leslie Bird's Nest Fern enjoys consistently light moisture but doesn't appreciate waterlogged conditions. Allow the upper layer of the potting mix to begin drying slightly between waterings, then water thoroughly and allow any excess to drain away.

Avoid letting the entire root ball dry out for extended periods, as this can result in crispy frond edges and reduced growth. Equally, keeping the mix constantly saturated can lead to root problems.

When watering, aim for the potting mix around the base rather than pouring water directly into the central crown. Water sitting in the growing point for extended periods can encourage crown rot, particularly in cooler conditions.

As this is a small 70mm nursery pot, check moisture levels regularly, especially during warmer weather when the mix may dry out more quickly.

Feeding

Feed year-round with a diluted, balanced liquid fertiliser to encourage healthy foliage and steady growth.

Ferns generally prefer gentle feeding, so use a weaker solution rather than applying fertiliser at full strength. Adjust the frequency according to the plant's growth rate, feeding less often during cooler periods when growth naturally slows.

Growing

Leslie Bird's Nest Fern grows in a compact, upright rosette, producing fresh fronds from a central growing point. As the plant matures, its foliage becomes fuller and more pronounced, with the distinctive crested tips creating an increasingly textured appearance.

As an epiphytic fern, it naturally grows in environments where its roots receive good airflow while retaining access to moisture. A loose, well-draining potting mix containing ingredients such as orchid bark and moisture-retentive organic matter is ideal.

It appreciates moderate to higher humidity, making naturally humid rooms such as bathrooms and kitchens excellent locations, provided there is sufficient indirect light.

Keep the plant in a warm, sheltered position away from cold draughts, heaters and drying air-conditioning vents. Avoid burying the central crown when repotting, as this can interfere with healthy growth.

Pet Friendly?

Yes! Leslie Bird's Nest Fern (Asplenium antiquum 'Leslie') is generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, making it a lovely option for pet-friendly indoor plant collections.

Although it isn't considered poisonous, it's still best to discourage pets from chewing the foliage, as consuming large amounts of any plant material may cause mild digestive upset.

Good to Know

The beautifully frilled ends of Leslie's foliage are a natural characteristic of this cultivar, rather than a sign of damage or unusual growing conditions.

Younger plants may produce relatively simple fronds, with the characteristic ruffled and forked tips becoming more noticeable as new growth develops. The amount of cresting can vary between individual fronds, giving each plant its own personality.

Like other Bird's Nest Ferns, Leslie produces new foliage from the centre of its rosette. Be careful not to damage this growing point, as it's responsible for producing the plant's future fronds.

• We photograph as many of our plants as possible; however, some listings may occasionally use supplier images.

• As plants are living things, every plant is unique and natural variations in size, colour and fullness should be expected.

• The plant you receive may not be the exact one pictured, but we'll always hand-pick a beautiful, healthy plant we'd happily display in our own home.
