Product Description

Small cactus, big personality! Tiegel’s Lobivia is a gorgeous little character that brings together striking spines, sculptural growth and the promise of spectacular flowers.

With its deep green, rounded stems, beautifully defined ribs and starburst clusters of golden-brown spines, Lobivia tiegeliana is packed with texture and character. As it matures, this charming cactus produces offsets around its base, gradually forming an impressive cluster of spiky little globes.

And just when you think it couldn't get any better, there's the flowering! Tiegel’s Lobivia is known for producing beautiful, brightly coloured, funnel-shaped flowers, often in vibrant shades of pink and magenta. These eye-catching blooms create a stunning contrast against its dark green stems and warm-toned spines.

Whether you're building a cactus collection or looking for something a little different for a sunny windowsill, this compact beauty delivers plenty of visual interest without taking up much space.

Why You'll Love It

• Naturally produces offsets, creating attractive clusters as it matures.
• Spectacular pink to magenta flowers provide a gorgeous seasonal display.
• Compact, sculptural growth makes it ideal for smaller spaces and cactus collections.
• Drought-tolerant and relatively easy to care for with plenty of light and good drainage.

The Details

• Botanical Name: Lobivia tiegeliana
• Common Name: Tiegel’s Lobivia
• Pot Size: 100mm Nursery Pot
• Plant Type: Flowering clumping cactus

Light

Tiegel’s Lobivia loves bright conditions and needs plenty of light to maintain its compact shape and encourage flowering.

Position indoors near a bright north-facing window or somewhere that receives several hours of gentle direct sunlight each day. Morning sunlight is particularly beneficial.

Outdoors, choose a sunny position with protection from intense afternoon sunlight during Melbourne's hottest summer days. Plants grown indoors or in shaded conditions should be gradually introduced to stronger sunlight to prevent scorching.

Insufficient light can cause the stems to stretch and become elongated, while also reducing the likelihood of flowering.

Watering

Like most cacti, Tiegel’s Lobivia prefers a thorough drink followed by a proper drying period.

During spring and summer, water deeply once the potting mix has dried out completely or almost completely. Allow excess water to drain freely and avoid leaving the pot sitting in water.

As temperatures begin to cool in autumn, gradually reduce watering to match the plant's slower growth.

During winter, keep the plant considerably drier, especially if it's being grown in cool conditions. A little water may occasionally be necessary to prevent excessive shrivelling, but prolonged moisture around the roots should be avoided.

Overwatering is the biggest concern, particularly during colder weather when the plant is resting.

Feeding

Feed Tiegel’s Lobivia throughout its active growing season to support healthy development and encourage flowering.

During spring and summer, apply a diluted, low-nitrogen cactus and succulent fertiliser approximately every four to six weeks.

Reduce feeding during autumn as growth begins to slow. If the plant enters a cool winter dormancy, withhold fertiliser until active growth resumes in spring.

Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can encourage soft, elongated growth rather than the compact, well-formed stems that make this cactus so attractive.

Growing

Lobivia tiegeliana is a relatively compact, slow to moderately growing cactus with a naturally clumping habit.

Young plants typically develop rounded, ribbed stems covered in distinctive clusters of fine, golden-brown to darker spines. Over time, offsets emerge around the base, gradually forming a larger colony of individual stems.

Plant in a very free-draining, mineral-rich growing medium that allows water to move through quickly while providing excellent aeration around the roots. Our Cacti & Succulent Mix is an excellent choice for maintaining healthy root development.

This species enjoys warm conditions during its active growing season and benefits from a cooler, drier rest over winter. Providing this seasonal change can help encourage the development of flower buds for the following spring and summer.

Protect container-grown plants from frost, prolonged cold and excessive winter rainfall, particularly during Melbourne's wetter months.

Repot during spring when necessary, choosing a container with drainage holes and avoiding an excessively oversized pot. Established offsets can also be carefully separated and propagated once they have developed sufficiently.

Pet Friendly?

Lobivia tiegeliana is generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs.

However, this cactus is not completely pet-safe, as its sharp spines can cause physical injury or irritation if touched, chewed or swallowed.

We recommend displaying it somewhere away from curious pets and little hands.

Good to Know

Tiegel’s Lobivia is particularly admired for its beautiful seasonal flowers, which can appear in vibrant shades of pink, magenta and occasionally other related tones. Flower colour and intensity can vary between individual plants.

Flowers generally appear during the warmer growing season, often following a cooler, drier winter rest. Individual blooms may be relatively short-lived, but mature, healthy plants can produce multiple flowers throughout the season.

The plant pictured has already developed a lovely cluster of offsets, giving it an established, sculptural appearance. As it continues growing, these offsets can gradually form an even fuller colony.

Lobivia is closely related to Echinopsis, and this species may also be encountered under the botanical name Echinopsis tiegeliana.

• We photograph as many of our plants as possible; however, some listings may occasionally use supplier images.
• As plants are living things, every plant is unique and natural variations in size, colour and fullness should be expected.
• The plant you receive may not be the exact one pictured, but we'll always hand-pick a beautiful, healthy plant we'd happily display in our own home.
