Light

Prefers bright, indirect light to encourage healthy growth and beautifully fenestrated foliage. Can tolerate moderate light, although growth may slow and new leaves may develop fewer holes. Avoid harsh, direct afternoon sunlight, which can scorch the leaves. Gentle morning sunlight is generally well tolerated.

Watering

Allow the top few centimetres of potting mix to dry between waterings. Water thoroughly, allowing excess water to drain away, and avoid leaving the pot sitting in water. Monkey Mask Monsteras enjoy consistent moisture but don't appreciate constantly soggy roots.

Feeding

Feed year-round with a balanced liquid fertiliser to encourage healthy foliage and steady climbing growth. Adjust the frequency according to its growth rate, feeding less often during cooler periods when growth naturally slows.

Growing

Naturally a climbing tropical vine, Monstera adansonii prefers a loose, chunky, well-draining aroid potting mix that allows plenty of airflow around its roots. It enjoys warm temperatures and moderate to high humidity, although established plants can adapt to typical indoor conditions.

Encourage its aerial roots to attach to the totem as it grows. Providing vertical support helps the plant develop a stronger climbing habit and can encourage larger, more mature foliage over time. Keep the climbing support secure as the plant becomes taller and heavier.

Pet Friendly?

No. Monstera adansonii contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals and is toxic to cats, dogs and humans if chewed or ingested. Best kept away from curious pets and little hands.

Good to Know

Those beautiful holes in the leaves aren't damage! They're called fenestrations and are a completely natural feature of Monstera adansonii. As the plant matures and grows in suitable conditions, new leaves can develop more pronounced openings.

Your Monkey Mask is already trained onto a totem, giving it a wonderful head start on its climbing journey. As new vines develop, gently guide and secure them to the support. If the totem is made from coco coir, it primarily provides physical support rather than the moisture retention of a sphagnum moss pole, so don't rely on it to water the plant.
