Product Description

A little quirky, a little wild and absolutely full of character! The Mouse Tail Cactus is an unusual tropical beauty with masses of slender, deep green stems that branch, twist and tumble in every direction.

With its distinctive cylindrical stems covered in tiny, soft-looking bristles, Rhipsalis baccifera subsp. horrida has a wonderfully textured appearance that's unlike your typical houseplant. Its densely branching growth creates a fascinating tangle of greenery, while longer stems gradually spill over the edges of the pot to form a beautiful cascading display.

Despite its cactus credentials, this rainforest-loving species prefers a little more moisture and protection from harsh sunlight than its desert-dwelling relatives. It's a fantastic choice for hanging baskets, elevated shelves and anyone looking to add something wonderfully different to their indoor jungle.

Why You'll Love It

• Slender, cylindrical green stems create a wonderfully wild and textured appearance.
• Tiny bristles give the stems their distinctive fuzzy, almost furry character.
• Naturally branching and trailing growth looks fantastic in hanging baskets.
• An unusual tropical cactus that adds personality to any indoor plant collection.
• Relatively easy to care for once its watering and lighting needs are understood.

The Details

• Botanical Name: Rhipsalis baccifera subsp. horrida
• Common Name: Mouse Tail Cactus
• Pot Size: 130mm Nursery Pot
• Plant Type: Tropical epiphytic cactus

Light

Mouse Tail Cactus thrives in bright, indirect light, similar to the filtered sunlight it receives beneath the forest canopy in its natural habitat.

Position it near an east-facing window where it can enjoy gentle morning sunlight, or slightly back from a bright north-facing window where the light is softened.

It can tolerate moderate indirect light, although growth may become slower and less dense over time.

Avoid prolonged exposure to harsh midday or afternoon sunlight, particularly during summer, as this can cause discolouration or scorching along its slender stems.

Watering

Unlike traditional desert cacti, Mouse Tail Cactus appreciates more consistent moisture, although it still needs excellent drainage and plenty of airflow around its roots.

Water thoroughly when approximately the upper third of the potting mix has dried, allowing excess water to drain freely from the nursery pot.

During spring and summer, check moisture levels regularly, as warmer temperatures and active growth may increase watering requirements.

In autumn and winter, reduce watering frequency slightly, allowing the mix to dry a little further between drinks without leaving the plant completely dry for extended periods.

Avoid keeping the potting mix constantly saturated, as prolonged wet conditions can lead to root rot. Thin, shrivelling stems may indicate insufficient moisture, while soft or yellowing growth can be a sign of excessive watering.

Feeding

Feed year-round using a balanced liquid fertiliser diluted to approximately half the manufacturer's recommended strength.

During spring and summer, fertilise every three to four weeks to encourage healthy stem development and fuller growth.

In autumn and winter, reduce feeding to approximately every six to eight weeks, adjusting according to the plant's growth rate and indoor conditions.

As an epiphytic cactus, Mouse Tail Cactus generally responds best to lighter, consistent feeding rather than heavy applications of fertiliser.

Growing

Rhipsalis baccifera subsp. horrida is a tropical epiphytic cactus belonging to the diverse Rhipsalis group, known for its unusual stem shapes and beautiful trailing growth habits.

Its slender, cylindrical stems branch repeatedly as the plant matures, creating a dense, tangled display of greenery. The stems are covered in small areoles that produce fine bristles, giving the plant its distinctive textured appearance.

Young stems may initially grow upright or outward before gradually arching and trailing under their own weight. As the plant develops, it can form a wonderfully full cascading display, making it particularly well suited to hanging baskets and elevated planters.

Mouse Tail Cactus prefers warm temperatures between approximately 18–28°C and appreciates moderate to high humidity. It can adapt to typical indoor conditions, although additional humidity can encourage healthier growth in particularly dry environments.

Protect it from cold draughts, sudden temperature changes and direct airflow from heating or air-conditioning.

For best results, grow it in a lightweight, well-aerated potting mix that retains a little moisture without becoming waterlogged. A tropical mix containing orchid bark, coco coir, perlite and other free-draining ingredients works particularly well.

Under suitable conditions, mature plants may produce small, delicate flowers along their stems, sometimes followed by tiny berry-like fruits.

Pet Friendly?

Good news! Mouse Tail Cactus (Rhipsalis baccifera subsp. horrida) is generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs.

It's a lovely option for households with curious pets, particularly when displayed in a hanging basket where its unusual stems can be admired from a safe distance.

Although the plant is considered non-toxic, its fine bristles may cause minor irritation if handled roughly, and chewing plant material can occasionally result in digestive upset.

Good to Know

Despite its name, Mouse Tail Cactus isn't a typical desert cactus. It naturally grows in tropical environments and appreciates filtered light, moderate humidity and more regular watering than many traditional cacti and succulents.

The fine bristles covering its stems are a natural feature of the plant rather than a sign of pests or disease. While they are much less formidable than the spines of many desert cacti, it's still best to handle the stems gently.

Its branching stems can grow in all sorts of directions before gradually developing a trailing habit. This slightly untamed appearance is completely natural and one of the reasons this species is such a fantastic hanging plant.

When repotting, choose a container only slightly larger than the existing root system and use a lightweight, free-draining mix. Avoid oversized pots, as excess soil can remain wet for too long.

• We photograph as many of our plants as possible; however, some listings may occasionally use supplier images.
• As plants are living things, every plant is unique and natural variations in size, colour and fullness should be expected.
• The plant you receive may not be the exact one pictured, but we'll always hand-pick a beautiful, healthy plant we'd happily display in our own home.
