Product Description

Cute as a button and bursting with personality! The Button Fern 'Duffii' is a charming little tropical fern that brings a playful twist to traditional fern foliage. With its delicate, arching fronds lined with tiny, rounded green leaflets, this miniature beauty is all about texture, character and effortless greenery.

Unlike the long, feathery foliage of many other ferns, 'Duffii' produces slender fronds decorated with adorable button-shaped leaflets. Fresh growth emerges in bright lime-green tones before gradually deepening into a richer green, creating a beautiful mix of colour throughout the plant.

Its naturally compact, spreading habit makes it a wonderful choice for shelves, desks, terrariums and small decorative planters. As it matures, the graceful fronds begin to arch and spill over the edges of its pot, creating a soft, cascading display. With its lovely foliage and relatively adaptable nature, this little fern is sure to win a few hearts!

The Details

• Botanical Name: Nephrolepis cordifolia 'Duffii'
• Common Name: Button Fern 'Duffii'
• Pot Size: 70mm Nursery Pot
• Plant Type: Evergreen tropical fern

Light

Button Fern 'Duffii' thrives in bright, indirect light, where its delicate fronds can grow lush and healthy without the risk of scorching. A position near an east-facing window or slightly back from a bright north-facing window is ideal.

It can also tolerate medium indirect light, although growth may become slower and the foliage less dense. Avoid prolonged exposure to harsh direct sunlight, particularly during Melbourne's warmer months, as this can dry out the fine foliage and cause brown or crispy leaflets.

Consistent, filtered light will encourage healthy growth and help maintain its beautiful green colouring.

Watering

Keep the potting mix lightly and consistently moist, allowing just the upper 1–2cm to begin drying before watering again. Button Ferns appreciate regular moisture and generally dislike being allowed to dry out completely.

Water thoroughly when needed, allowing excess moisture to drain freely from the nursery pot. Although this fern enjoys moisture, constantly saturated soil can lead to root problems, so good drainage is essential.

Because this plant comes in a small 70mm nursery pot, the mix may dry relatively quickly, particularly during warmer weather. Check moisture levels regularly rather than relying on a fixed watering schedule.

During cooler periods, reduce watering frequency slightly as growth slows, while avoiding prolonged periods of complete dryness.

Feeding

Feed year-round with a diluted, balanced liquid fertiliser to encourage healthy frond development and steady growth.

Button Ferns have relatively modest nutritional requirements, so gentle, regular feeding is preferable to strong applications. Adjust the frequency according to the plant's growth rate, feeding more regularly during warmer, active growing periods and less frequently through cooler months.

Avoid excessive fertilising, as a build-up of salts in the potting mix can damage delicate roots and contribute to browning foliage.

Growing

Nephrolepis cordifolia 'Duffii' is a compact, spreading fern that produces slender, arching fronds lined with small, rounded leaflets. As it matures, new growth gradually fills out the plant, creating a lush, softly cascading appearance.

It prefers a moisture-retentive but well-aerated potting mix that provides a balance of hydration and drainage. A quality tropical mix containing ingredients such as coco coir, perlite and pumice is an excellent choice.

Warm temperatures between approximately 18–27°C and moderate to high humidity encourage healthy growth. While this fern can adapt to normal household conditions, it appreciates additional humidity, particularly during Melbourne's drier indoor periods.

Protect the plant from cold draughts, heating vents and sudden temperature changes. Excessively dry air can cause the delicate leaflets to develop brown or crispy edges.

As the plant matures, its fronds will naturally spread and arch beyond the edges of the pot, making it particularly attractive in hanging planters and elevated decorative containers. Repot when necessary into a container slightly larger than the existing root system.

Pet Friendly?

Yes! Button Fern 'Duffii' is generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, making it a lovely choice for households with curious pets.

Although it's considered pet friendly, it's still best to discourage chewing, as consuming large amounts of any plant material may cause mild digestive upset.

Good to Know

Despite its common name, Button Fern 'Duffii' isn't the same plant as the commonly sold Button Fern (Pellaea rotundifolia). This variety belongs to the Nephrolepis genus and is closely related to the familiar Boston Fern, although its tiny rounded leaflets give it a very different appearance.

Its compact foliage makes it a wonderful choice for terrariums and humid indoor displays, provided there is sufficient airflow and the potting mix isn't kept excessively wet.

As the plant grows, older fronds may naturally yellow or brown. These can be carefully removed at the base to keep the plant looking fresh and encourage a tidy appearance.

If the foliage begins developing crispy edges, check for inconsistent watering, low humidity or excessive direct sunlight. Maintaining relatively stable growing conditions will help keep those adorable little buttons looking their best.
