Light

Prefers bright, indirect light to maintain its beautiful pink colouring and healthy foliage. A position near an east-facing window or slightly back from a brighter window is ideal.

It can tolerate moderate indirect light, although its vibrant colouring may become less pronounced and growth may slow. Avoid harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch its delicate leaves and cause the edges to dry out.

Watering

Keep the potting mix consistently lightly moist, allowing just the very surface to begin drying between waterings. Fittonias have fine, relatively shallow root systems and prefer regular moisture rather than alternating between very wet and completely dry conditions.

These little plants are well known for their dramatic reactions to thirst! If the soil becomes too dry, the foliage may suddenly wilt or collapse. A thorough watering will often help it recover, although repeated drying can eventually damage the leaves.

Always allow excess water to drain away, as constantly waterlogged soil can lead to root problems.

Feeding

Feed year-round with a diluted, balanced liquid fertiliser to support healthy foliage and vibrant new growth.

Fittonias are relatively light feeders, so a gentle feeding routine is best. Adjust the frequency according to the plant's growth rate, reducing applications during cooler periods when growth naturally slows.

Growing

This Nerve Plant has a naturally compact, spreading growth habit, gradually forming a dense cushion of beautifully patterned foliage. As it matures, its stems may gently spread beyond the edges of its pot, creating a lovely soft, leafy appearance.

It grows best in a light, moisture-retentive but well-draining potting mix that provides plenty of aeration around its roots. A quality tropical indoor mix is ideal for balancing consistent moisture with healthy drainage.

Humidity is particularly important for keeping its delicate foliage looking its best. It thrives in warm environments with moderate to high humidity, making it especially well suited to terrariums and enclosed plant displays.

Aim for temperatures between 18–27°C and protect it from cold draughts, heaters and air-conditioning vents. Occasional pinching of longer stems can encourage bushier growth and help maintain a compact shape.

Pet Friendly?

Yes! Fittonia albivenis is considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, making it a lovely option for pet-friendly households.

As with any houseplant, it's still best to discourage pets from chewing the foliage, as eating plant material can occasionally cause mild digestive upset.

Good to Know

Fittonias are particularly well suited to terrarium growing, where the naturally higher humidity helps keep their delicate leaves looking fresh and healthy. Their compact growth habit also makes them excellent for creating colourful miniature indoor landscapes.

The intensity and distribution of the pink colouring can vary between individual plants and may change slightly depending on growing conditions and light levels.

While Fittonias are famous for dramatically wilting when thirsty, keeping the potting mix consistently lightly moist is the best way to avoid unnecessary stress and maintain beautiful foliage.
