The Details
• Botanical Name: Parodia scopa albispina var. minima
• Common Name: Dwarf Silver Ball Cactus
• Pot Size: 70mm Nursery Pot
• Plant Type: Clustering desert cactus
Light
The Dwarf Silver Ball Cactus thrives in bright conditions and appreciates several hours of direct sunlight each day.
Indoors, position it near a sunny north-facing window where it can receive plenty of natural light. An east-facing window with good morning sunshine can also provide suitable growing conditions.
Outdoors, choose a bright, well-ventilated location with morning sunlight and some protection from intense afternoon heat, particularly during Melbourne's hottest summer days.
Although this cactus enjoys sunshine, plants previously grown in shaded or greenhouse conditions should be gradually introduced to stronger direct light to prevent scorching.
Adequate light helps maintain compact growth, healthy spination and the plant's distinctive rounded appearance. Insufficient light may cause the stems to stretch or become misshapen.
Watering
Like most desert cacti, the Dwarf Silver Ball Cactus prefers a thorough watering followed by a good drying-out period.
During spring and summer, water when the potting mix has dried out completely. Water thoroughly, allowing excess moisture to drain freely from the nursery pot.
Avoid frequent light watering, as this can encourage shallow root development and leave the growing medium inconsistently moist.
As temperatures begin to cool in autumn, gradually reduce watering to match the plant's slower growth.
During winter, keep the growing medium predominantly dry, particularly when temperatures are low. In a consistently warm indoor environment, occasional light watering may be necessary if the plant begins to show signs of dehydration.
Never allow the pot to sit in standing water. Excess moisture around the roots, especially during cooler weather, can quickly lead to rot.
When watering, direct water onto the potting mix rather than over the densely spined stems, as moisture can become trapped between the offsets.
Feeding
Feed your Dwarf Silver Ball Cactus throughout the year according to its growing conditions and seasonal activity.
During spring and summer, apply a diluted cactus and succulent fertiliser approximately every four to six weeks to encourage healthy growth and support the development of new offsets.
As temperatures cool and growth slows, gradually reduce feeding frequency.
During a cool winter rest, fertilising is generally unnecessary. Resume regular feeding when warmer conditions encourage active growth.
Choose a balanced or relatively low-nitrogen fertiliser suitable for cacti and succulents, and avoid excessive feeding, which can encourage weak or unnaturally rapid growth.
Growing
Parodia scopa albispina var. minima is a compact form of a South American cactus valued for its miniature growth habit, dense white spination and tendency to form attractive clusters.
Unlike the taller forms of Parodia scopa, this variety remains relatively small, gradually producing numerous offsets around its base.
Each individual stem is rounded to slightly cylindrical, with closely spaced ribs and areoles covered in fine, pale spines. As the plant matures, these offsets develop into a beautifully textured mound that can become increasingly impressive over time.
Growth is generally slow to moderate, making this cactus particularly well suited to small containers and collections where space is limited.
For best results, use a free-draining, mineral-rich growing medium that provides excellent aeration around the roots.
Our Cacti & Succulent Mix is an excellent choice, offering the drainage and structure needed to support healthy root development while reducing the risk of excess moisture.
Choose a pot with drainage holes and avoid moving the plant into a significantly larger container before necessary. A pot that is only slightly larger than the root system will help prevent the growing medium from remaining wet for too long.
The Dwarf Silver Ball Cactus appreciates good airflow and bright conditions throughout the year.
In Melbourne, it can enjoy a sheltered outdoor position during warmer weather, provided it is protected from prolonged rainfall and excessive moisture.
During winter, a bright, dry and protected location is ideal. Avoid prolonged frost exposure, particularly while the plant is young or the potting mix is damp.
With maturity and suitable growing conditions, Parodia scopa forms can produce attractive yellow flowers, although flowering is not guaranteed and may take several years.
Pet Friendly?
The Dwarf Silver Ball Cactus is not generally regarded as chemically toxic to cats or dogs.
However, it is not considered completely pet-safe due to its numerous sharp spines, which can cause irritation or physical injury if touched, chewed or swallowed.
Although its silvery-white covering may appear soft and fluffy, the spines can be surprisingly prickly.
Keep this cactus out of reach of curious pets and young children to prevent accidental contact.
Good to Know
The Dwarf Silver Ball Cactus gets its charming appearance from the dense covering of fine, pale spines surrounding its rounded green stems.
Although it looks wonderfully soft and fluffy, those little spines are still sharp, so it's best admired rather than handled.
Its naturally clustering growth habit means new offsets may gradually emerge around the base, creating an increasingly full and textured appearance as the plant matures.
Each specimen develops its own unique arrangement of rounded heads, making no two plants exactly alike.
The silvery-white spines can also vary slightly in density and colour depending on the plant's age and growing conditions.
Avoid misting or regularly wetting the spines, as moisture can become trapped between the tightly packed offsets.
When repotting, use thick gloves or folded newspaper to protect your hands and avoid damaging the delicate clusters.
• We photograph as many of our plants as possible; however, some listings may occasionally use supplier images.
• As plants are living things, every plant is unique and natural variations in size, colour and fullness should be expected.
• The plant you receive may not be the exact one pictured, but we'll always hand-pick a beautiful, healthy plant we'd happily display in our own home.
