Product Description

A little heart goes a long way! The Heartleaf Philodendron is one of those indoor plants that makes greenery look effortless, with beautiful heart-shaped leaves, a glossy finish and a relaxed, trailing growth habit.

Its rich green foliage brings a fresh, tropical feel to just about any space. Let it tumble from a shelf, trail over the edge of a bookcase or climb a support for a fuller, more upright display. However you choose to style it, those lovely heart-shaped leaves are always the star of the show.

And the best part? It's wonderfully adaptable and relatively forgiving, making it a fantastic choice for beginners and experienced plant lovers alike. A reliable little grower that rewards you with plenty of fresh foliage without demanding too much attention.

Why You'll Love It
  • Beautiful heart-shaped leaves with a glossy, rich green finish.
  • A versatile trailing or climbing plant that suits all sorts of spaces.
  • Relatively easy to care for and a great choice for beginners.
  • Adaptable to a range of indoor lighting conditions.
  • A lovely way to add soft, cascading greenery to shelves and hanging planters.

The Details

• Botanical Name: Philodendron hederaceum
• Common Name: Heartleaf Philodendron, Sweetheart Plant
• Pot Size: 125mm Nursery Pot
• Plant Type: Evergreen tropical climbing or trailing aroid

Light

Prefers bright, indirect light but is also quite tolerant of medium to lower indoor light conditions. Growth may slow and become a little more spaced out in darker positions, so a spot with good natural light will encourage fuller, healthier foliage.

Avoid prolonged exposure to direct afternoon sunlight, which can scorch its leaves. Gentle morning sun is generally fine once the plant has adjusted to its position.

Watering

Allow the top few centimetres of potting mix to dry out before watering thoroughly. Heartleaf Philodendrons appreciate a little drying time between drinks and are generally more forgiving of slightly dry soil than constantly wet roots.

Always allow excess water to drain away, and avoid leaving the nursery pot sitting in a saucer of water. Adjust your watering frequency according to the temperature, available light and how quickly the mix dries.

Feeding

Feed year-round with a diluted, balanced liquid fertiliser to encourage healthy foliage and steady growth. Adjust the frequency according to its growth rate, feeding less often during cooler periods when growth naturally slows.

Avoid overfeeding, as excessive fertiliser can cause leaf damage and salt build-up in the potting mix.

Growing

Naturally a climbing tropical vine, the Heartleaf Philodendron can be grown as a trailing plant or encouraged to climb a moss pole or other support. Given something to climb, its leaves may gradually increase in size as the plant matures.

Plant into a well-draining, airy indoor potting mix that retains some moisture without becoming waterlogged. It appreciates warmth and moderate humidity but generally adapts well to typical indoor conditions.

Regularly trimming longer stems can encourage branching and a fuller appearance. Those cuttings are also wonderfully easy to propagate in water or a suitable propagation mix.

Pet Friendly?

Unfortunately, no. Heartleaf Philodendrons contain calcium oxalate crystals, which are toxic to cats, dogs and humans if chewed or ingested. Keep this one out of reach of curious pets and little hands.

Good to Know

One of the lovely things about Heartleaf Philodendrons is their versatility. You can let the vines grow long and relaxed for a cascading display or regularly trim them to maintain a more compact, bushy plant.

New leaves often emerge in a lighter shade of green before deepening in colour as they mature. You may also notice papery sheaths around the stems where new growth has emerged; these are a completely normal part of the plant's growth.

If you're looking for a reliable indoor climber or trailer that offers plenty of greenery without being particularly demanding, this is a fantastic choice.

• We photograph as many of our plants as possible; however, some listings may occasionally use supplier images.

• As plants are living things, every plant is unique and natural variations in size, colour and fullness should be expected.

• The plant you receive may not be the exact one pictured, but we'll always hand-pick a beautiful, healthy plant we'd happily display in our own home.
