Product Description

Pinstripes have never looked so good! The Birkin Philodendron is a seriously stylish indoor plant, loved for its beautiful glossy green leaves decorated with fine, creamy-white stripes. It's a little bit sophisticated, a little bit unpredictable and absolutely full of character.

What makes the Birkin particularly special is its ever-changing foliage. New leaves can emerge with delicate white pinstripes, while older leaves often display a deeper green colour. Some leaves may even develop unusual patterns or patches of colour, making every plant wonderfully unique.

With its compact, self-heading growth habit, the Birkin is perfect for styling on a shelf, side table or desk. It brings plenty of tropical personality without needing a huge amount of space, making it a fantastic choice for anyone looking to add something a little different to their indoor jungle.

Why You'll Love It
  • Beautiful glossy green foliage with striking creamy-white pinstripes.
  • Each leaf develops its own unique pattern and colour combination.
  • A compact, upright growth habit that's perfect for smaller spaces.
  • Fresh foliage creates an ever-changing display as the plant matures.
  • A beautiful statement plant that looks fantastic in a decorative planter.

The Details

• Botanical Name: Philodendron hybrida 'Birkin'
• Common Name: Birkin Philodendron, White Wave Philodendron
• Pot Size: 130mm Nursery Pot
• Plant Type: Evergreen tropical self-heading aroid

Light

Prefers bright, indirect light to maintain its beautiful pinstriped foliage and encourage healthy, compact growth. A position near a bright window, protected from harsh direct sunlight, is ideal.

While the Birkin can tolerate medium light conditions, insufficient light may result in slower growth and less pronounced variegation. Gentle morning sunlight is generally well tolerated, but avoid strong afternoon sun, which can scorch the leaves.

Watering

Allow the top few centimetres of potting mix to dry out before watering thoroughly. Birkins prefer a little drying time between drinks and generally don't appreciate constantly wet soil.

Water until excess moisture drains from the bottom of the nursery pot, then allow it to drain completely. Avoid leaving the plant sitting in water, as prolonged moisture around the roots can lead to yellowing leaves and root problems.

Adjust your watering frequency according to the temperature, available light and how quickly the potting mix dries.

Feeding

Feed year-round with a diluted, balanced liquid fertiliser to encourage healthy foliage and steady growth. Adjust the frequency according to its growth rate, feeding less often during cooler periods when growth naturally slows.

Avoid overfeeding, as excessive fertiliser can cause salt build-up in the potting mix and damage the roots or foliage.

Growing

Unlike climbing Philodendrons, the Birkin has a naturally compact, self-heading growth habit, producing new leaves from a central growing point. As it matures, it gradually develops a fuller, more upright appearance.

Grow in a well-draining, airy aroid potting mix that retains some moisture without becoming waterlogged. It appreciates warm temperatures, moderate humidity and good air circulation, but should be protected from cold draughts and direct airflow from heating or cooling systems.

Rotate the pot occasionally to encourage even growth, and remove any ageing or damaged leaves to keep your plant looking its best.

Pet Friendly?

Unfortunately, no. Like other Philodendrons, the Birkin contains calcium oxalate crystals, which are toxic to cats, dogs and humans if chewed or ingested.

Keep this one away from curious pets and little hands.

Good to Know

One of the most fascinating things about the Birkin is that its variegation isn't always predictable! New leaves may emerge with beautiful fine white stripes, while others can develop larger areas of green or cream.

The Birkin is an unstable cultivated variety, meaning it can occasionally produce leaves that look quite different from the usual pinstriped pattern. Some plants may even begin reverting towards the appearance of their Rojo Congo ancestry, producing darker green or reddish foliage.

This natural variation is part of the Birkin's charm, although consistently greener growth can also be influenced by lower light levels.

New leaves are often much lighter when they first unfurl, with their colour and contrast developing as they mature. Give your Birkin a bright, comfortable position and consistent care, and enjoy watching each new leaf reveal its own unique pattern.

• We photograph as many of our plants as possible; however, some listings may occasionally use supplier images.

• As plants are living things, every plant is unique and natural variations in size, colour and fullness should be expected.

• The plant you receive may not be the exact one pictured, but we'll always hand-pick a beautiful, healthy plant we'd happily display in our own home.
