Product Description

Tall, spiky and full of character! The Woolly Tree Cactus is a striking columnar cactus that brings a little desert drama to your plant collection.

With its upright, blue-green to fresh green stems, beautifully defined vertical ribs and clusters of golden-brown spines, Pilosocereus fulvilanatus is all about texture and architectural appeal. Delicate tufts of pale, woolly hairs emerge around its areoles, adding an extra layer of interest to its already impressive appearance.

Unlike smaller, rounded cacti, this species grows upwards, gradually developing into a tall, tree-like specimen as it matures. Its strong vertical form makes it a fantastic choice for sunny windowsills, cactus displays and anyone looking to introduce a little height to their collection.

Best of all, this sun-loving cactus is relatively low maintenance once its basic needs are met. Give it plenty of light, excellent drainage and a little patience, and you'll have a sculptural beauty that only gets more impressive with age.

Why You'll Love It

• Striking upright growth adds height and architectural interest to your collection.
• Beautiful blue-green to green stems with prominent vertical ribs.
• Golden-brown spines and delicate woolly hairs create wonderful texture.
• Naturally develops into an impressive columnar cactus as it matures.
• Drought-tolerant and relatively low maintenance with the right growing conditions.

The Details

• Botanical Name: Pilosocereus fulvilanatus
• Common Name: Woolly Tree Cactus
• Pot Size: 100mm Nursery Pot
• Plant Type: Columnar cactus

Light

The Woolly Tree Cactus loves sunshine and thrives in bright, well-lit conditions.

Position indoors near a sunny north-facing window where it can receive several hours of direct sunlight each day. Bright morning sunlight is also beneficial, although the plant will generally perform best with stronger light than many common indoor plants.

Outdoors, choose a sunny, sheltered position with protection from prolonged periods of intense afternoon sunlight while the plant is becoming established.

If moving your cactus from indoors or a shaded growing environment into stronger sunlight, introduce the change gradually to prevent sunburn.

Insufficient light can cause weak, elongated growth and a loss of the compact, well-defined ribs that give this cactus its distinctive appearance.

Watering

As a drought-tolerant cactus, Pilosocereus fulvilanatus prefers its potting mix to dry out between waterings.

During spring and summer, water thoroughly once the mix has dried out completely or almost completely. Allow any excess water to drain freely and never leave the pot sitting in water.

As temperatures begin to cool in autumn, gradually reduce watering to match the plant's slower growth.

During winter, keep the cactus considerably drier, particularly when temperatures are low. Occasional light watering may be needed in a warm indoor environment, but prolonged moisture around the roots should always be avoided.

Overwatering is the biggest risk, especially during Melbourne's cooler months. When in doubt, it's generally better to wait a little longer before watering.

Feeding

Feed your Woolly Tree Cactus throughout the year, adjusting the frequency according to its seasonal growth.

During spring and summer, apply a diluted, low-nitrogen cactus and succulent fertiliser approximately every four to six weeks to support healthy stem development.

As temperatures cool and growth slows, reduce feeding significantly. During a cool winter rest, fertilising is generally unnecessary until active growth resumes.

Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can encourage soft, weak growth rather than the sturdy, upright stems this cactus is known for.

Growing

Pilosocereus fulvilanatus is an upright-growing cactus that develops a distinctive columnar form with pronounced vertical ribs.

Young plants typically grow as a single stem, gradually increasing in height and thickness as they mature. Under favourable conditions, older specimens may eventually develop branches, creating a more tree-like appearance.

Its green to blue-green stems are lined with clusters of sharp spines, often accompanied by fine, woolly hairs around the areoles. These features become increasingly distinctive as the plant develops.

Plant in a very free-draining, mineral-rich potting medium that provides excellent aeration around the roots. Our Cacti & Succulent Mix is a great choice for maintaining healthy root development while preventing excessive moisture retention.

This species appreciates warmth and is best protected from frost, prolonged cold and excessive winter rainfall. In Melbourne, a bright indoor position or sheltered greenhouse is generally preferable during the colder months.

As the cactus grows taller, choose a stable pot with drainage holes to support its upright habit. Repot during spring when necessary, increasing the pot size gradually rather than moving into an excessively large container.

With the right conditions and a little patience, this cactus can develop into an impressive statement specimen.

Pet Friendly?

Pilosocereus fulvilanatus is generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs.

However, the Woolly Tree Cactus is not completely pet-safe, as its sharp spines can cause physical injury or irritation if touched, chewed or swallowed.

We recommend keeping it away from curious pets and little hands.

Good to Know

The Woolly Tree Cactus gets its name from the fine, woolly hairs that develop around its areoles, contrasting beautifully with its longer, golden-brown spines.

Although younger plants may display relatively modest amounts of woolly growth, these characteristics can become more pronounced as the cactus matures.

Stem colour can also vary depending on growing conditions, with some plants displaying stronger blue-green tones when grown in bright light.

This is a columnar species, so expect it to grow upwards rather than form the rounded clusters commonly associated with many smaller cacti.

Like other Pilosocereus species, mature plants may eventually produce flowers under suitable conditions, although flowering is uncommon in young, container-grown specimens.

• We photograph as many of our plants as possible; however, some listings may occasionally use supplier images.
• As plants are living things, every plant is unique and natural variations in size, colour and fullness should be expected.
• The plant you receive may not be the exact one pictured, but we'll always hand-pick a beautiful, healthy plant we'd happily display in our own home.
