Product Description

A cactus with a wild side! The Red Dragon Cactus is anything but your typical desert dweller. With long, flattened stems that twist, branch and cascade in all directions, this wonderfully unusual jungle cactus brings a little tropical drama to your indoor plant collection.

Botanically known as Rhipsalis ramulosa, and also commonly sold as Pseudorhipsalis ramulosa, this fascinating plant produces slender, leaf-like stems that begin a fresh green before developing beautiful reddish and burgundy tones when exposed to brighter light. Its relaxed, trailing growth makes it particularly striking in hanging baskets, where its stems can spill naturally over the edges.

Native to tropical forests, the Red Dragon Cactus is an epiphytic cactus, meaning it naturally grows attached to trees rather than rooted in desert sand. It loves good airflow, filtered light and a chunky, free-draining potting mix. With its sculptural appearance and relatively straightforward care requirements, it's a fantastic choice for anyone looking for something a little different.

Why You'll Love It

• Long, flattened stems create a wonderfully unusual, cascading silhouette.

• Green foliage can develop beautiful red and burgundy tones in brighter light.

• Perfect for hanging baskets, elevated shelves and trailing plant displays.

• A tropical jungle cactus with a fascinating epiphytic growth habit.

• An excellent choice for collectors and anyone who loves something a little unusual.

The Details

• Botanical Name: Rhipsalis ramulosa (syn. Pseudorhipsalis ramulosa)
• Common Name: Red Dragon Cactus
• Pot Size: 130mm Nursery Pot
• Plant Type: Epiphytic tropical cactus

Light

Prefers bright, indirect light, although it can tolerate some gentle morning sun. A position near a bright window with filtered sunlight is ideal for encouraging healthy growth and maintaining its distinctive foliage.

One of the most interesting features of the Red Dragon Cactus is its ability to develop reddish and burgundy tones when exposed to brighter light. In shadier conditions, the stems will generally remain greener.

Avoid prolonged exposure to harsh afternoon sun, particularly during Melbourne's warmer months, as excessive sunlight can scorch the flattened stems. Gradually introduce brighter conditions rather than moving the plant directly into strong sunlight.

Watering

Unlike traditional desert cacti, the Red Dragon Cactus appreciates more regular moisture, particularly when actively growing.

Allow the upper portion of the potting mix to dry between waterings, then water thoroughly until excess moisture drains from the pot. While it enjoys some moisture, the roots should never remain constantly wet or waterlogged.

During cooler periods or when growth slows, allow the mix to dry a little further before watering again. Its flattened stems can begin to wrinkle or lose firmness when the plant becomes excessively dry.

Feeding

Feed year-round with a diluted, balanced liquid fertiliser to support healthy stem development and steady growth.

As an epiphytic cactus, it doesn't require heavy feeding, so a half-strength application is generally sufficient. Adjust the frequency according to its growth rate, feeding less often during cooler periods when growth naturally slows.

Avoid excessive fertiliser, as a build-up of salts in the potting mix can damage its relatively delicate root system.

Growing

The Red Dragon Cactus has a naturally branching, trailing growth habit, producing long, flattened stems that gradually cascade over the sides of its container. As the plant matures, these stems can develop into an impressive display of layered, twisting foliage.

In its natural habitat, it grows as an epiphyte in tropical forests, often attaching itself to tree branches where its roots receive plenty of airflow and moisture drains away quickly.

For best results, grow it in a chunky, well-draining potting mix containing ingredients such as orchid bark, perlite, pumice and coco-based materials. A mix designed for epiphytic cacti or orchids can work particularly well.

It appreciates moderate to high humidity but can adapt to typical indoor conditions when given consistent care. Keep it protected from cold draughts and frost, particularly during Melbourne's winter months.

Its trailing habit makes it an excellent choice for hanging baskets, although it also looks beautiful spilling from an elevated planter or shelf.

Pet Friendly?

Rhipsalis ramulosa is generally regarded as non-toxic to cats and dogs.

However, it's still best to keep plants away from pets that enjoy chewing foliage, as consuming plant material can occasionally cause mild digestive upset.

Good to Know

Despite its common name, the Red Dragon Cactus doesn't produce the sharp spines typically associated with desert cacti. Instead, its flattened, flexible stems create a wonderfully soft and sculptural appearance.

You may notice small aerial roots developing along the stems, particularly around the edges and branching points. These are completely normal and reflect the plant's natural epiphytic growth habit, helping it attach to surfaces and absorb moisture in its native environment.

Under suitable conditions, mature plants may also produce small flowers followed by decorative berries along the stem margins.

Its red colouring is influenced by light exposure, so don't be surprised if the foliage changes between green, bronze and reddish tones throughout the year. These natural colour variations are part of what makes this plant so interesting.

• We photograph as many of our plants as possible; however, some listings may occasionally use supplier images.

• As plants are living things, every plant is unique and natural variations in size, colour and fullness should be expected.

• The plant you receive may not be the exact one pictured, but we'll always hand-pick a beautiful, healthy plant we'd happily display in our own home.
