Big, full and beautifully wild, Rhipsalis baccifera ssp. mauritiana is one of those plants that effortlessly softens a space. Collection No. 42 produces masses of slender, branching stems that spill gracefully from hanging baskets, creating a lush cascading display that's right at home indoors.

Although it's technically a cactus, this tropical species naturally grows high in rainforest trees where it enjoys filtered light and regular moisture. It's incredibly easy to grow and rewards you with fuller, longer growth as it matures.

Given the right conditions, mature plants may also produce delicate white flowers in spring, followed by small ornamental berries later in the season.

Light
Thrives in bright, indirect light. Outdoors, position in around 50% shade. Too much direct sun can cause stems to redden and become smaller, while heavy shade may reduce flowering.

Watering
Keep the potting mix lightly moist throughout spring and summer while actively growing. Reduce watering during winter, allowing the mix to dry slightly between waterings to encourage flowering and seasonal dormancy.

Feeding
Feed with a quality liquid fertiliser or slow-release fertiliser during spring and summer when fresh growth begins.

Growing
Unlike desert cacti, Rhipsalis naturally grows attached to trees in moist forests. It prefers a free-draining potting mix, regular moisture during the growing season and good airflow. If the plant starts looking tired or overgrown, simply trim the stems back to encourage fresh new growth.

Yes. Rhipsalis are generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, although it's always best to discourage pets from chewing on any houseplant.
