The Details

• Botanical Name: Ficus elastica 'Ruby'
• Common Name: Ruby Rubber Plant
• Pot Size: 130mm Nursery Pot
• Plant Type: Tropical evergreen tree

Light

Loves bright, indirect light to maintain its beautiful pink and green variegation. A little gentle morning sunlight can help encourage those gorgeous rosy tones, but avoid harsh afternoon sun, particularly through hot windows. Lower light conditions may result in slower growth and less vibrant colouring.

Watering

Water thoroughly when the top few centimetres of soil have dried out. Ruby Rubber Plants prefer their potting mix to partially dry between waterings rather than staying constantly moist. Ensure excess water can drain freely, as soggy roots are definitely not their thing!

Feeding

Feed regularly throughout the year with a balanced liquid fertiliser to support healthy foliage and steady growth. Adjust the frequency and strength according to the plant's growth rate and the fertiliser instructions.

Growing

Ruby Rubber Plants naturally grow upright, developing sturdy stems and large, glossy leaves. With the right conditions, they can eventually become impressive indoor feature trees. They prefer warm temperatures, a well-draining potting mix and a relatively consistent environment. Rotate occasionally to encourage even growth and prevent the plant from leaning towards its light source.

Pet Friendly?

Unfortunately not! Ficus elastica contains a milky latex sap that can cause irritation to the mouth and digestive system if chewed or ingested. Best kept away from curious pets and little ones.

Good to Know

The beautiful pink variegation on a Ruby Rubber Plant is influenced by light exposure. Brighter conditions generally encourage stronger colouring, while insufficient light can lead to greener new growth.

Like other Ficus varieties, Ruby Rubber Plants appreciate consistency. Avoid frequently moving them between dramatically different lighting or temperature conditions, as sudden changes can cause leaf drop.

You may also notice a reddish sheath around emerging leaves. This is completely normal and protects the new foliage as it develops. Once the leaf unfurls, the sheath naturally dries and falls away.

• We photograph as many of our plants as possible; however, some listings may occasionally use supplier images.

• As plants are living things, every plant is unique and natural variations in size, colour and fullness should be expected.

• The plant you receive may not be the exact one pictured, but we'll always hand-pick a beautiful, healthy plant we'd happily display in our own home.
