The Details
• Botanical Name: Schefflera actinophylla 'Amate'
• Common Name: Amate Umbrella Tree, Umbrella Tree
• Pot Size: 300mm Nursery Pot
• Plant Type: Tropical Evergreen Tree
Light
The Amate Umbrella Tree thrives in bright, indirect light, where it can maintain its lush foliage and develop strong, healthy growth.
Position your plant near a bright window where it receives plenty of natural light throughout the day. A well-lit position near an east-facing or north-facing window is generally ideal.
It can also enjoy some gentle morning sunlight, particularly when gradually acclimatised. However, prolonged exposure to harsh afternoon sun through glass may scorch the leaves, especially during Melbourne's warmer months.
Although the Amate Umbrella Tree can tolerate moderate indoor light, it will generally grow more slowly in these conditions and may develop a less compact appearance.
In very low light, the plant may begin to lose its lower leaves, develop elongated stems or produce smaller foliage as it stretches towards the available light.
For the fullest growth and healthiest appearance, aim for a consistently bright position with plenty of filtered natural sunlight.
Watering
The Amate Umbrella Tree enjoys regular watering but prefers its potting mix to partially dry between drinks.
Allow approximately the top 3–5cm of the potting mix to dry before watering thoroughly, ensuring excess water can drain freely from the bottom of the nursery pot.
During spring and summer, when temperatures are warmer and the plant is actively growing, it will generally require more frequent watering.
In autumn and winter, reduce watering as growth slows and the potting mix takes longer to dry.
Larger plants in generous nursery pots can retain moisture deeper within the root ball, even when the surface appears dry. Checking the moisture level below the surface is particularly helpful for avoiding overwatering.
While the Amate Umbrella Tree appreciates consistent moisture, it doesn't enjoy sitting in constantly wet or waterlogged soil. Excessive moisture can lead to root problems, yellowing leaves and premature leaf drop.
Allowing the plant to become excessively dry for extended periods can also cause stress, resulting in drooping foliage and dry, brown leaf edges.
The goal is a comfortable balance: regular, thorough watering followed by a period of partial drying.
Feeding
The Amate Umbrella Tree is a vigorous grower that appreciates regular feeding to support its abundant foliage and ongoing development.
During spring and summer, apply a balanced liquid fertiliser approximately every 2–4 weeks, following the manufacturer's recommended dilution rates.
A quality fertiliser containing essential micronutrients will help encourage healthy leaf development, strong stems and vibrant green colouring.
During autumn and winter, reduce the frequency and strength of feeding to reflect the plant's slower growth.
If your Amate Umbrella Tree continues actively growing in a warm, brightly lit indoor environment, occasional light feeding throughout the cooler months can still be beneficial.
Avoid overfertilising, as excessive nutrient salts can accumulate in the potting mix and potentially damage the roots.
Growing
The Amate Umbrella Tree is a tropical evergreen plant known for its vigorous growth, upright stems and distinctive compound leaves.
Each leaf is made up of several elongated leaflets arranged around a central point, creating the umbrella-like appearance that gives this plant its common name.
In suitable tropical conditions, Schefflera actinophylla can develop into a substantial tree. When grown indoors in a container, however, its height and overall size are much easier to manage.
With plenty of light, warmth and appropriate care, an indoor Amate Umbrella Tree can eventually reach approximately 2–3 metres or more, depending on its growing environment and available space.
This particular plant already has a beautifully established, multi-stemmed appearance, with dense foliage creating a lush canopy from relatively low on the plant.
As it matures, the stems will gradually become stronger and more woody, while new growth continues developing towards the upper portions of the plant.
The Amate Umbrella Tree prefers a quality, nutrient-rich potting mix that retains some moisture while remaining well-draining and adequately aerated. A mix containing organic material alongside ingredients such as perlite, pumice or fine bark is ideal.
It enjoys warm temperatures, generally performing best between approximately 18–28°C, and should be protected from frost, cold draughts and sudden temperature fluctuations.
Moderate humidity is beneficial, although established plants generally adapt well to normal indoor humidity when their light and watering requirements are met.
If your plant becomes too tall or develops an uneven shape, selective pruning during the warmer growing months can encourage branching and help maintain a fuller, bushier appearance.
Occasionally rotating the pot will also encourage more balanced growth, particularly when the plant receives most of its light from one direction.
When repotting becomes necessary, choose a container only slightly larger than the existing root ball and use fresh, well-draining potting mix.
With consistent care, this beautiful tropical tree can become an impressive long-term feature in your home.
Pet Friendly?
No. The Amate Umbrella Tree is toxic to cats and dogs if chewed or ingested.
Like other Schefflera varieties, it contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals that can cause irritation to the mouth, tongue and digestive system.
Symptoms following ingestion may include drooling, pawing at the mouth, vomiting and difficulty swallowing.
The plant's sap may also cause skin irritation in sensitive individuals.
We recommend positioning your Amate Umbrella Tree away from curious pets and children, and wearing gloves when pruning or handling damaged stems.
If you suspect your pet has ingested part of the plant, contact your veterinarian for advice.
Good to Know
The Amate Umbrella Tree is a cultivated selection of Schefflera actinophylla, appreciated for its attractive, glossy foliage and impressive indoor growth habit. Its substantial leaves give it a particularly bold appearance, making it a fantastic choice for creating a tropical statement.
One of the lovely features of this plant is the way its foliage develops. Fresh new growth may emerge a lighter shade of green before gradually deepening in colour as the leaves mature.
As the plant grows taller, some older leaves may naturally yellow and drop from the lower stems. Occasional leaf loss is a normal part of its development, although sudden or excessive leaf drop can indicate changes in watering, light or temperature.
Because of its large, glossy leaves, the Amate Umbrella Tree can collect dust over time. Gently wiping the foliage with a soft, damp cloth will help maintain its beautiful appearance and allow the leaves to make the most of the available light.
It's also worth remembering that this is a naturally vigorous tree. While it makes an excellent indoor plant, Schefflera actinophylla can become invasive in some warm Australian environments. We recommend enjoying it as a contained indoor feature rather than planting it directly into the garden.
The plant pictured is a wonderfully established specimen with multiple upright stems, a dense canopy and beautifully glossy green foliage. Its generous 300mm nursery pot makes it an excellent option for anyone wanting to introduce a substantial amount of greenery into their space straight away.
