The Details

• Common Name: Schumi Red Radiator Plant
• Pot Size: 70mm Nursery Pot
• Plant Type: Tropical evergreen foliage plant

Light

Prefers bright, indirect light to maintain its rich foliage colour and encourage healthy, compact growth. It can also tolerate moderate indirect light, although growth may become slower and the foliage may appear less vibrant.

Avoid prolonged direct sunlight, particularly during the hottest parts of the day, as this can scorch its delicate leaves. A position near a bright window with filtered light is ideal.

Watering

Allow the upper portion of the potting mix to dry between waterings before giving the plant a thorough drink. Peperomias have relatively succulent leaves and stems that store some moisture, making them more tolerant of occasional dryness than constantly wet conditions.

Avoid overwatering or leaving the pot sitting in water, as the roots are sensitive to prolonged saturation. During cooler periods, check the potting mix carefully before watering, as it may take longer to dry.

Feeding

Feed year-round with a diluted, balanced liquid fertiliser to support healthy foliage and steady growth.

Adjust feeding frequency according to the plant's growth rate, reducing applications during cooler periods when growth naturally slows. A gentle feeding routine is ideal, as Peperomias generally have modest nutrient requirements.

Growing

Schumi Red has a naturally compact, clumping growth habit, producing beautifully textured leaves on short, reddish stems. As it matures, it develops into a dense mound of richly coloured foliage, making it an excellent choice for smaller decorative pots and indoor displays.

It prefers warm, stable indoor temperatures and appreciates moderate humidity, although it generally adapts well to typical household conditions. A light, airy, well-draining potting mix will help maintain healthy roots and prevent excess moisture from building up around the base.

Remove any ageing or damaged leaves as needed to keep the plant looking its best, and avoid exposing it to cold draughts or sudden temperature changes.

Pet Friendly?

Yes! Peperomia caperata is generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, making Schumi Red a lovely choice for pet-friendly households.

As with any houseplant, it's still best to discourage pets from chewing the foliage, as eating plant material can occasionally cause mild digestive upset.

Good to Know

The Schumi Red Radiator Plant is particularly loved for its incredible leaf texture. The deeply puckered surface creates natural highlights and shadows, giving the foliage an almost metallic appearance as the light moves across it.

Its rich burgundy colouring can vary depending on growing conditions, light levels and leaf maturity. Some leaves may appear almost black, while others reveal beautiful plum, reddish-purple or bronze tones.

Despite its tropical appearance, Schumi Red doesn't require constantly moist soil. Allowing the potting mix to partially dry between waterings is one of the best ways to keep this little beauty happy.
