Product Description

Tiny leaves, enormous personality! Jori Spikemoss is a gorgeous little greenery machine, with its bright, fresh green foliage and intricate, ruffled texture creating a miniature forest right before your eyes. It's one of those plants you can't help but lean in for a closer look!

Known as Selaginella 'Jori', this fascinating plant produces masses of tiny, overlapping leaves along finely branching stems. Its beautifully textured foliage creates a soft, cushion-like appearance, with new growth adding even more layers of vibrant green. Despite its mossy appearance, it's not actually a true moss, but a member of an ancient group of plants known as spikemosses.

With its naturally low-growing, spreading habit, Jori is a wonderful choice for terrariums, miniature landscapes and humid indoor spaces. Whether you're creating a lush little woodland scene or simply want something beautifully different for your plant collection, this charming little plant delivers plenty of character.

The Details

• Botanical Name: Selaginella 'Jori'
• Common Name: Jori Spikemoss
• Pot Size: 130mm Nursery Pot
• Plant Type: Evergreen, low-growing spikemoss (lycophyte)

Light

Prefers medium to bright, indirect light, where its vibrant green foliage can maintain its beautiful colour and compact growth. A position receiving gentle, filtered light is ideal.

Jori can tolerate somewhat lower light conditions, although growth may become slower and less dense. Avoid direct sunlight, particularly during the warmer parts of the day, as its delicate foliage can dry out and scorch quickly.

Watering

Keep the potting mix consistently moist, allowing little to no drying between waterings. Jori Spikemoss is particularly sensitive to dehydration and doesn't appreciate being allowed to dry out completely.

Water gently and thoroughly, ensuring moisture reaches the root system while allowing excess water to drain away. Although it loves moisture, avoid leaving the pot sitting in stagnant water, as prolonged waterlogging can cause root and stem problems.

Because of its fine foliage and relatively shallow roots, this plant can dry out much faster than many other indoor plants. Check moisture levels regularly, especially when growing outside a terrarium.

Feeding

Feed year-round with a very diluted, balanced liquid fertiliser, applied occasionally to support healthy growth. Jori has relatively low nutrient requirements and can be sensitive to excessive fertiliser.

Adjust feeding according to its growth rate, reducing applications during cooler periods when growth naturally slows. A gentle approach is best, as strong fertiliser solutions may damage its delicate roots and foliage.

Growing

Jori Spikemoss develops a low, spreading growth habit, producing densely packed branches covered in tiny, overlapping leaves. Over time, it can form a beautifully textured carpet of greenery.

It thrives in warm, consistently humid conditions, making it particularly well suited to enclosed or partially enclosed terrariums where moisture levels remain relatively stable.

Grow in a fine-textured, moisture-retentive but well-draining potting mix. Avoid overly chunky substrates that may dry unevenly around its shallow root system.

Protect it from cold draughts, heaters, air conditioners and other sources of dry air. While it appreciates high humidity, gentle air circulation is still beneficial to help prevent fungal problems.

Pet Friendly?

Selaginella species are generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, making Jori Spikemoss a lovely option for pet-friendly plant collections.

As with any houseplant, it's still best to discourage curious pets from eating the foliage, as consuming plant material can occasionally cause mild digestive upset.

Good to Know

Despite its common name and moss-like appearance, Jori Spikemoss isn't a true moss or a fern. It belongs to the ancient group of vascular plants known as lycophytes, which reproduce using spores rather than flowers or seeds.

One of Jori's most distinctive features is its tightly packed, ruffled foliage. Its tiny leaves overlap along branching stems, creating a beautifully detailed texture that looks almost like miniature green rosettes.

Like other moisture-loving Selaginella, Jori is particularly sensitive to drying out. If its foliage becomes completely dehydrated and crispy, those damaged sections generally won't recover. Maintaining consistent moisture and humidity is the secret to keeping it looking lush.

Its compact, spreading growth makes it a wonderful addition to terrariums and miniature woodland landscapes. Allow it to gradually spread into a soft green carpet, or gently trim back excessive growth to maintain its shape.

• We photograph as many of our plants as possible; however, some listings may occasionally use supplier images.

• As plants are living things, every plant is unique and natural variations in size, colour and fullness should be expected.

• The plant you receive may not be the exact one pictured, but we'll always hand-pick a beautiful, healthy plant we'd happily display in our own home.
