The Details

• Botanical Name: Pteris sp.
• Common Name: Silver Brake Fern
• Pot Size: 200mm Hanging Basket
• Plant Type: Tropical Evergreen Fern

Light

Prefers bright, indirect light to maintain its beautiful silver-green foliage and encourage healthy growth. Can tolerate moderate light, although growth may slow. Avoid harsh, direct afternoon sunlight, which can scorch its delicate fronds. Gentle morning sunlight is generally well tolerated.

Watering

Keep the potting mix consistently lightly moist, allowing just the surface to begin drying between waterings. Water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain away. Avoid letting the basket dry out completely, as prolonged dryness can cause crispy fronds and browning leaf edges.

Feeding

Feed year-round with a diluted, balanced liquid fertiliser to encourage healthy fronds and steady growth. Ferns are relatively light feeders, so use a weaker solution and reduce feeding frequency during periods of slower growth.

Growing

Prefers a loose, well-draining potting mix rich in organic matter that retains moisture without becoming waterlogged. Enjoys warm temperatures and moderate to high humidity, making it a lovely choice for naturally humid indoor spaces.

Its arching fronds gradually spread outwards as the plant matures, creating a lush, layered display. Protect from cold draughts, heaters and excessively dry air, which can contribute to crispy foliage.

Pet Friendly?

Pteris ferns are generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs. However, as this plant is identified only to genus level, we recommend confirming the exact species for species-specific pet safety information. As with any plant, it's best to discourage curious pets from chewing on the foliage.

Good to Know

Those beautiful silvery-white markings are completely natural! Each frond develops its own unique pattern, with pale central sections contrasting against deep green edges. New growth may emerge a brighter green before developing its characteristic colouring.

Hanging baskets can dry out a little faster than traditional pots, particularly in warm or breezy conditions. Check the potting mix regularly and give the basket a thorough watering when needed to keep those gorgeous fronds looking their best.
