The Details

• Common Name: Sunset Blaze Begonia, Rex Begonia
• Pot Size: 130mm Nursery Pot
• Plant Type: Tropical ornamental foliage Begonia

Light

Prefers bright, indirect light to maintain its vibrant foliage colours and encourage healthy, compact growth. A position near a window with filtered sunlight is ideal.

Gentle morning sunlight may be tolerated, but avoid harsh direct sun, which can scorch the delicate leaves. In lower light conditions, growth may slow and the foliage colours can become less pronounced.

Watering

Keep the potting mix lightly moist, allowing the top 2–3cm to begin drying before watering thoroughly. Ensure excess water drains freely, as Rex Begonias are particularly sensitive to waterlogged roots.

Avoid prolonged dryness, which can cause wilting and crispy leaf edges. Check moisture levels regularly and adjust watering according to the plant's needs rather than following a fixed schedule.

Feeding

Feed year-round with a diluted, balanced liquid fertiliser to support healthy foliage and steady growth.

Adjust the frequency according to its growth rate, feeding more regularly during active growth and less often when growth naturally slows. Avoid excessive fertiliser, as Rex Begonias can be sensitive to nutrient build-up.

Growing

Sunset Blaze has a compact, spreading growth habit, producing colourful foliage from its fleshy rhizomatous stems. It prefers warm temperatures of approximately 18–26°C and moderate to high humidity.

Grow in a light, airy, well-draining tropical potting mix that retains some moisture without becoming overly dense. Protect the plant from cold draughts and sudden temperature changes.

Good airflow is important, particularly in humid environments. Avoid leaving water sitting on the foliage, as Rex Begonias can be susceptible to fungal problems, including powdery mildew.

Pet Friendly?

No. Begonias are considered toxic to cats and dogs if ingested due to soluble calcium oxalates, which are particularly concentrated in their underground parts.

Keep this plant out of reach of curious pets and children.

Good to Know

Sunset Blaze belongs to the Rex Begonia group, celebrated for its spectacular ornamental foliage and incredible range of colours, patterns and textures.

Unlike cane Begonias, which develop taller, upright stems, Rex Begonias grow from fleshy rhizomes and typically maintain a lower, fuller appearance.

Its foliage can display varying shades of bronze, copper, burgundy and green as individual leaves mature, making each plant beautifully unique.

Although primarily grown for its colourful leaves, Sunset Blaze can also produce charming clusters of small pink flowers. These delicate blooms provide a lovely contrast against its dramatic foliage.
