The Details

• Botanical Name: Syngonium podophyllum 'White Butterfly'
• Common Name: White Butterfly Arrowhead Vine
• Pot Size: 180mm Nursery Pot
• Plant Type: Tropical evergreen climbing vine

Light

White Butterfly Arrowhead Vine thrives in bright, indirect light, which helps maintain its beautiful pale green colouring and compact, leafy appearance.

Position it near an east-facing window where it can enjoy gentle morning sunlight, or in a well-lit room with plenty of filtered natural light.

It can also tolerate moderate indirect light, making it a versatile option for a range of indoor positions. However, growth may slow and the foliage can become darker or less distinctly patterned in lower light conditions.

Avoid prolonged exposure to harsh afternoon sunlight, as this can scorch the lighter areas of the leaves.

Watering

White Butterfly prefers its potting mix to dry slightly between waterings while retaining some moisture around the roots.

Water thoroughly when the top 2–3cm of soil feels dry, allowing excess water to drain freely from the nursery pot.

During warmer months, the plant may require more frequent watering, particularly when actively producing new foliage. In cooler weather, reduce watering frequency as growth slows and the soil takes longer to dry.

Avoid keeping the potting mix constantly saturated, as this can lead to root rot and yellowing leaves.

Drooping foliage can sometimes indicate that the plant is thirsty, although similar symptoms can occur with overwatering, so always check the soil before reaching for the watering can.

Feeding

Feed year-round with a balanced liquid fertiliser to encourage healthy growth and maintain its beautiful foliage.

During spring and summer, fertilise approximately every two to four weeks, following the manufacturer's recommended dilution.

In autumn and winter, reduce feeding to approximately every six to eight weeks, depending on the plant's growth rate and indoor conditions.

Regular, moderate feeding is preferable to occasional heavy applications, which can cause fertiliser salts to accumulate in the potting mix.

Growing

Syngonium podophyllum 'White Butterfly' is a tropical climbing aroid known for its distinctive arrow-shaped leaves and beautiful pale green variegation.

Young plants generally develop a compact, bushy appearance, with leaves emerging close together on relatively short stems. As the plant matures, it naturally begins to produce longer vines and can be encouraged to climb a moss pole or other suitable support.

When given something to climb, mature Syngoniums can develop larger leaves with more pronounced lobes. Alternatively, the stems can be allowed to trail from a shelf or hanging planter for a softer, cascading appearance.

It prefers warm temperatures between approximately 18–28°C and appreciates moderate to high humidity. While it can adapt to typical indoor humidity levels, additional humidity can help maintain healthy foliage, particularly during periods of dry weather or indoor heating.

For best results, grow it in a well-draining, aerated potting mix that retains some moisture without becoming compacted. A quality aroid mix containing ingredients such as orchid bark, coco chips, perlite and pumice provides excellent airflow around the roots.

Regularly rotate the pot to encourage balanced growth, and trim back any overly long stems if you'd prefer to maintain a fuller, more compact shape.

Pet Friendly?

No. White Butterfly Arrowhead Vine is toxic to cats and dogs if ingested.

Like other Syngoniums, it contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can cause irritation to the mouth and throat, excessive drooling, vomiting and difficulty swallowing.

We recommend keeping this plant out of reach of curious pets and young children.

Good to Know

The White Butterfly Arrowhead Vine is loved for its beautiful mix of pale lime-green centres and darker green margins. The exact colouring and pattern can vary between leaves, with some displaying more pronounced marbling and others developing softer, more blended shades.

The plant shown in our photographs is a lovely, established specimen with a naturally full and spreading growth habit. As it matures, its appearance may gradually change from a compact foliage plant into a more obvious climbing or trailing vine.

Although it's often sold as a bushy indoor plant, Syngonium is naturally a climber. Providing a support can encourage larger foliage and more mature growth, while occasional pruning will help maintain its compact shape.

• We photograph as many of our plants as possible; however, some listings may occasionally use supplier images.
• As plants are living things, every plant is unique and natural variations in size, colour and fullness should be expected.
• The plant you receive may not be the exact one pictured, but we'll always hand-pick a beautiful, healthy plant we'd happily display in our own home.
