Product Description

A little sunshine in every leaf! Meet the Variegated Dwarf Umbrella Tree, a wonderfully cheerful indoor beauty with glossy green foliage splashed with creamy yellow and soft lime tones. With its distinctive umbrella-shaped clusters of leaves and naturally bushy growth habit, Schefflera arboricola brings plenty of colour, texture and tropical personality to your indoor jungle.

And those leaves really are something special! Each cluster fans out like a tiny umbrella, with individual leaflets showing off their own unique combination of green and golden-yellow variegation. Some are beautifully marbled, others have bold splashes of cream, and no two look quite alike. Its lush, branching growth makes it a fantastic choice for filling an empty corner, brightening up a living room or adding a little leafy height to your space.

The best part? This colourful character is surprisingly easy to get along with! The Variegated Dwarf Umbrella Tree is a relatively hardy indoor plant that responds well to regular pruning and can be shaped into a compact, bushy feature or allowed to develop a taller, more tree-like appearance. Give it plenty of filtered light, a well-draining potting mix and a little room to grow, and it'll reward you with beautiful foliage all year round.

  • Naturally bushy growth that can be pruned and shaped to suit your space
  • A relatively easy-care indoor plant that's great for beginners and experienced plant lovers

The Details

• Botanical Name: Schefflera arboricola
• Common Name: Variegated Dwarf Umbrella Tree, Variegated Umbrella Plant
• Pot Size: 200mm Nursery Pot
• Plant Type: Tropical Evergreen Shrub

Light

Prefers bright, indirect light to maintain its beautiful creamy-yellow variegation and encourage healthy, compact growth. Can tolerate moderate light, although growth may slow and new foliage may become greener with less pronounced variegation.

Gentle morning sunlight is generally well tolerated, but avoid harsh, direct afternoon sun, particularly during Melbourne's warmer months, as this can scorch the lighter sections of the leaves. Rotate the pot occasionally to encourage even growth.

Watering

Allow the top few centimetres of potting mix to dry between waterings. Water thoroughly, ensuring excess water drains freely from the nursery pot, and avoid leaving the plant sitting in water.

The Dwarf Umbrella Tree is reasonably forgiving of brief dry periods once established, but prolonged dryness can cause leaf drop. Equally, constantly wet potting mix can lead to root problems, so it's best to check the moisture level before reaching for the watering can.

Feeding

Feed year-round with a diluted, balanced liquid fertiliser to encourage healthy foliage and steady growth. Adjust the frequency according to its growth rate, feeding less often during cooler periods when growth naturally slows.

Avoid overfertilising, as excess fertiliser salts can accumulate in the potting mix and cause browning leaf tips or damage to the roots.

Growing

Prefers a loose, well-draining potting mix that retains a little moisture while allowing plenty of airflow around the roots. Enjoys warm temperatures and moderate humidity, although established plants generally adapt well to typical indoor conditions.

Naturally a branching evergreen shrub, Schefflera arboricola can develop into a taller, tree-like plant over time. Regular pruning encourages a fuller, bushier appearance and helps maintain its shape. Trim back leggy stems just above a leaf node to encourage fresh branching growth.

Keep away from cold draughts, heaters and sudden temperature changes, which can contribute to leaf drop. Repot when the roots begin to outgrow their container, choosing a pot only slightly larger than the existing one.

Pet Friendly?

No. Schefflera arboricola contains calcium oxalate crystals and other irritating compounds and is toxic to cats and dogs if chewed or ingested. Keep away from curious pets and little hands.

Good to Know

Those beautiful yellow and cream markings are completely natural! Variegation occurs when sections of the foliage contain less chlorophyll, creating the gorgeous contrast between deep green and lighter colours.

Because the lighter sections contain less chlorophyll, variegated varieties generally appreciate brighter conditions than their completely green counterparts. If new growth starts appearing noticeably greener, your plant may benefit from a little more indirect light.

You might also notice some natural variation in leaf size, colour and pattern as the plant grows. That's all part of its charm! Occasional pruning will help maintain a lovely, full shape, while its glossy foliage can be gently wiped with a damp cloth to remove dust and keep those beautiful colours looking their best.

• We photograph as many of our plants as possible; however, some listings may occasionally use supplier images.

• As plants are living things, every plant is unique and natural variations in size, colour and fullness should be expected.

• The plant you receive may not be the exact one pictured, but we'll always hand-pick a beautiful, healthy plant we'd happily display in our own home.
