Product Description

Meet the little plant with a big appetite! The Venus Flytrap is one of nature's most fascinating creations, famous for its incredible snapping traps that make it look like something straight out of a science fiction movie. With vibrant green foliage, striking red trap interiors and delicate tooth-like edges, this carnivorous curiosity is guaranteed to capture attention.

Botanically known as Dionaea muscipula, the Venus Flytrap is native to the nutrient-poor wetlands of the southeastern United States. Rather than relying on fertiliser-rich soil, it has developed an extraordinary way of supplementing its nutrients: catching insects! Tiny trigger hairs inside each trap detect movement, causing the two halves to snap shut when stimulated correctly.

Whether you're a curious beginner, a dedicated carnivorous plant collector or simply looking for something a little different, the Venus Flytrap is a wonderfully interactive addition to your plant collection. Give it plenty of sunshine, pure water and the right growing conditions, and you'll have a fascinating little predator to admire.

Why You'll Love It

• Fascinating snap traps naturally capture and digest small insects.

• Vibrant green foliage contrasts beautifully with red trap interiors.

• A unique carnivorous plant that's endlessly interesting to observe.

• Compact growth makes it perfect for sunny windowsills and outdoor displays.

• A brilliant conversation starter for plant lovers of all ages.

The Details

• Botanical Name: Dionaea muscipula
• Common Name: Venus Flytrap
• Pot Size: 100mm Nursery Pot
• Plant Type: Carnivorous perennial

Light

Venus Flytraps love sunshine! Provide at least 4–6 hours of direct sunlight daily, with longer periods generally producing stronger growth and more vibrant red colouring inside the traps.

They perform best outdoors in a sunny position where they can experience natural seasonal changes. If growing indoors, a very bright, sunny window or a suitable full-spectrum grow light is essential. Acclimatise plants gradually to stronger sunlight to prevent scorching.

Watering

Keep the growing medium consistently moist using rainwater, distilled water or reverse-osmosis water. Venus Flytraps are extremely sensitive to dissolved minerals, so ordinary tap water should generally be avoided unless its mineral content has been confirmed as suitable.

During active growth, standing the nursery pot in a shallow tray containing approximately 1–2cm of suitable water works well. In winter, reduce the amount of standing water while ensuring the growing medium never dries out completely.

Feeding

No fertiliser required! Venus Flytraps have evolved to grow in nutrient-poor environments, and conventional fertilisers can damage their sensitive roots.

When grown outdoors, they naturally catch insects to supplement their nutritional needs. Indoor plants can also survive without regular insect feeding, provided they receive sufficient light.

Growing

Venus Flytraps are temperate carnivorous plants that grow from an underground rhizome and naturally experience a winter dormancy period.

They thrive in a specialised, nutrient-poor carnivorous growing medium, such as a mixture of unfertilised sphagnum peat moss and perlite or suitable silica sand. Avoid ordinary potting mixes, compost and fertiliser-enriched products.

Unlike tropical houseplants, Venus Flytraps benefit from experiencing cooler winter temperatures. In Melbourne's climate, they can generally be grown outdoors year-round in a suitable sunny position, provided they are protected from extreme heat, prolonged freezing conditions and drying winds.

Pet Friendly?

Venus Flytraps are generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs.

While their traps might look intimidating, they pose no significant danger to pets or people. However, chewing or disturbing the plant can damage its delicate traps, so it's best kept away from curious paws.

Good to Know

Venus Flytraps have one of the most remarkable trapping mechanisms in the plant kingdom. Each trap contains sensitive trigger hairs, and when these are stimulated in the right sequence, the trap snaps shut in a fraction of a second.

Resist the temptation to trigger the traps for entertainment! Each trap can only close a limited number of times before eventually dying, and unnecessary movement uses valuable energy.

During winter, Venus Flytraps naturally enter dormancy, often producing smaller traps and losing much of their summer foliage. This is a normal part of their annual growth cycle, not necessarily a sign that the plant is dying. Healthy plants typically resume vigorous growth as temperatures warm in spring.

Never feed your Venus Flytrap meat, cheese or other human food. If you choose to feed it, only use appropriately sized insects, although outdoor plants will generally take care of this themselves.

• We photograph as many of our plants as possible; however, some listings may occasionally use supplier images.

• As plants are living things, every plant is unique and natural variations in size, colour and fullness should be expected.

• The plant you receive may not be the exact one pictured, but we'll always hand-pick a beautiful, healthy plant we'd happily display in our own home.
