The Details

• Botanical Name: Fittonia albivenis 'White Star'
• Common Name: White Star Nerve Plant
• Pot Size: 70mm Nursery Pot
• Plant Type: Tropical foliage houseplant

Light

Prefers bright, indirect light to maintain its beautiful white and green foliage. A position near an east-facing window or slightly back from a brighter window is ideal.

White Star can tolerate moderate indirect light, although growth may slow and the foliage may become less vibrant. Avoid harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch its delicate leaves and cause them to dry out.

Watering

Keep the potting mix consistently lightly moist, allowing just the very surface to begin drying between waterings. Fittonias have relatively fine roots and don't appreciate being allowed to dry out completely.

If the soil becomes too dry, the foliage may suddenly wilt or collapse. Fortunately, these dramatic little plants will often perk back up after a thorough watering, provided they haven't remained dry for too long.

Water thoroughly and allow any excess to drain away. While White Star enjoys regular moisture, constantly waterlogged soil can lead to root problems.

Feeding

Feed year-round with a diluted, balanced liquid fertiliser to encourage healthy foliage and steady growth.

Fittonias are relatively light feeders, so a gentle feeding routine is ideal. Adjust the frequency according to the plant's growth rate, reducing applications during cooler periods when growth naturally slows.

Growing

White Star is a compact, spreading tropical plant that develops a dense carpet of beautifully patterned foliage. As it matures, its stems may gently spread over the edges of its pot, creating a lovely soft, leafy appearance.

It thrives in a light, moisture-retentive but well-draining potting mix that provides good aeration around its roots. A quality tropical indoor mix is ideal for maintaining the balance between moisture and drainage.

Humidity is particularly important for this little beauty. It prefers a warm environment with moderate to high humidity, making it especially well suited to terrariums, enclosed plant displays or naturally humid indoor spaces.

Aim for temperatures between 18–27°C and keep it away from cold draughts, heaters and air-conditioning vents. Pinching back longer stems can encourage a fuller, bushier plant.

Pet Friendly?

Yes! Fittonias are considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, making White Star a lovely choice for pet-friendly households.

As with any houseplant, it's still best to discourage pets from chewing the foliage, as eating plant material can occasionally cause mild digestive upset.

Good to Know

White Star is particularly well suited to terrarium growing because it enjoys the increased humidity and consistent moisture these environments can provide. Its naturally compact habit also makes it easy to incorporate into smaller planted arrangements.

One of the most recognisable characteristics of Fittonias is their tendency to wilt dramatically when thirsty. While they can often recover quickly after watering, maintaining consistent moisture will help keep the foliage looking its best.

If growing in a closed terrarium, ensure it receives indirect light and avoid excessive watering, as moisture will evaporate much more slowly than in an open pot.

• We photograph as many of our plants as possible; however, some listings may occasionally use supplier images.

• As plants are living things, every plant is unique and natural variations in size, colour and fullness should be expected.

• The plant you receive may not be the exact one pictured, but we'll always hand-pick a beautiful, healthy plant we'd happily display in our own home.
