Product Description

Glossy, gorgeous and wonderfully low-maintenance! The Zanzibar Gem is one of those indoor plants that makes looking after greenery feel almost effortless. With its beautifully polished, deep green leaves and upright, sculptural stems, this hardy favourite brings a fresh, contemporary feel to just about any space.

Botanically known as Zamioculcas zamiifolia, the Zanzibar Gem produces thick, fleshy stems lined with smooth, oval-shaped leaflets. New growth emerges a lighter, brighter green before gradually deepening in colour, creating a lovely contrast against its mature foliage.

Perfect for beginners, busy plant parents or anyone looking to brighten up a room without a demanding care routine, this resilient beauty is especially appreciated for its ability to tolerate lower light and occasional missed waterings. From desks and bookshelves to living rooms and offices, the Zanzibar Gem is always a stylish choice.

Why You'll Love It

• Beautiful glossy green foliage with a naturally polished appearance.

• Upright, architectural growth adds structure to indoor spaces.

• Tolerates lower light conditions better than many indoor plants.

• Drought-tolerant and forgiving of occasional missed waterings.

• A fantastic low-maintenance choice for beginners and busy households.

The Details

• Botanical Name: Zamioculcas zamiifolia
• Common Name: Zanzibar Gem, ZZ Plant
• Pot Size: 100mm Nursery Pot
• Plant Type: Tropical evergreen perennial

Light

Zanzibar Gems thrive in bright, indirect light but are also well known for their ability to tolerate lower light conditions. This makes them a versatile choice for rooms where other indoor plants might struggle.

Growth will generally be slower in lower light, while brighter positions encourage stronger, more consistent development. Avoid prolonged exposure to harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.

Watering

Allow the growing medium to dry out thoroughly between waterings. Zanzibar Gems store water in their thick underground rhizomes and fleshy stems, making them particularly tolerant of dry periods.

Water thoroughly once the mix has dried, allowing excess water to drain away completely. Overwatering is one of the most common causes of problems, so it's better to wait a little longer than to keep the roots constantly damp.

Feeding

Feed year-round with a diluted, balanced liquid fertiliser to support healthy foliage and steady growth.

Adjust the frequency according to the plant's growth rate, feeding less often during cooler periods when growth naturally slows. Zanzibar Gems are relatively light feeders, so avoid excessive fertiliser applications.

Growing

Zanzibar Gems have a naturally upright growth habit, producing sturdy stems directly from underground rhizomes. As the plant matures, new shoots gradually emerge from the base, creating a fuller, more established appearance.

Plant in a well-draining indoor potting mix with good aeration around the roots. They prefer warm indoor conditions and should be protected from frost and prolonged exposure to cold temperatures.

Their slow to moderate growth makes them particularly suitable for smaller spaces, with little pruning required beyond removing occasional ageing or damaged stems.

Pet Friendly?

No. Zanzibar Gems contain calcium oxalate crystals and are toxic to cats and dogs if chewed or ingested.

They can cause irritation to the mouth and digestive system, so keep them safely out of reach of curious pets and children.

Good to Know

The Zanzibar Gem's glossy leaves naturally have a beautiful shine, so there's no need for leaf-shining products. Simply wipe away dust occasionally with a soft, damp cloth to keep the foliage looking its best.

Its underground rhizomes act as water-storage organs, helping the plant cope with periods of dryness. These can gradually become quite substantial as the plant matures, so choose a sturdy pot with drainage when repotting.

Although Zanzibar Gems tolerate lower light, they still need some natural or suitable artificial light to remain healthy. Low-light tolerant doesn't mean no-light tolerant!

• We photograph as many of our plants as possible; however, some listings may occasionally use supplier images.

• As plants are living things, every plant is unique and natural variations in size, colour and fullness should be expected.

• The plant you receive may not be the exact one pictured, but we'll always hand-pick a beautiful, healthy plant we'd happily display in our own home.
