The Details

• Botanical Name: Zamioculcas zamiifolia
• Common Name: Zanzibar Gem, ZZ Plant
• Pot Size: 150mm Nursery Pot
• Plant Type: Tropical Evergreen / Rhizomatous Indoor Plant

Light

Thrives in bright, indirect light but is particularly well known for tolerating moderate to low light conditions. Growth will be slower in darker positions. Avoid harsh direct afternoon sun, which can scorch the leaves.

Watering

Allow the potting mix to dry out completely, or almost completely, between waterings. Its underground rhizomes store moisture, so it's much happier being a little too dry than too wet. Water thoroughly when needed and reduce watering significantly during cooler months.

Feeding

Feed with a diluted, balanced liquid indoor plant fertiliser every 6–8 weeks during spring and summer. Reduce feeding during autumn and winter, providing only occasional light applications if actively growing.

Growing

A slow-growing, upright plant that produces thick, fleshy stems lined with glossy leaflets. New growth often emerges a lighter green before gradually deepening in colour.

Prefers a free-draining growing medium, such as our Minty Greenhouse Indoor Arid Mix, and a pot with good drainage. Avoid oversized pots and constantly damp soil, which can lead to rhizome rot.

Pet Friendly?

No. Zanzibar Gems contain calcium oxalate crystals and are toxic to cats and dogs if chewed or ingested. Keep away from curious pets and children.

Good to Know

One of the biggest mistakes with Zanzibar Gems is overwatering. Their thick underground rhizomes act as water reservoirs, allowing them to go surprisingly long periods between drinks.

Don't be alarmed if your ZZ Plant takes its time producing new growth. They're naturally slow growers, but with patience and suitable conditions, fresh upright shoots will gradually appear.

• We photograph as many of our plants as possible; however, some listings may occasionally use supplier images.
• As plants are living things, every plant is unique and natural variations in size, colour and fullness should be expected.
• The plant you receive may not be the exact one pictured, but we'll always hand-pick a beautiful, healthy plant we'd happily display in our own home.
